Jesus might have survived his execution because of his short stay on the cross, because he was rescued by Joseph of Arimathea, or he was substituted with Judas the Twin, Thomas or Simon of Cyrene. There is a surprising amount of support for such ideas, and some of the very earliest communities of Christians believed them.
