Definitely working myself into an early grave right now, but the good news is that massive progress has been made and there IS a light at the end of the tunnel now. It's REALLY far away, but it's there.
Last rotation at work was pretty busy all over. Did not have any dead or slow nights. And had a number of fairly complicated cases. After that I immediately flew up to Providence because I had a LOT of work to get done in a short amount of time. Because of the way my schedule worked out for May, moving day is next weekend. This means that I needed to get the apartment for me and Paul move-in capable (though by no means move-in ready... there is quite a distinction) this trip. With that in mind I planned out my attack on the house and reserved a paint sprayer.
Wednesday after I arrived we picked up the sprayer (the rental place is right next to the airport) and picked up paint supplies etc from Lowes. Then I went home and went to bed at 6. Got up at 6 the next morning and let the crazy begin. I spent the whole day Thursday cleaning the 2nd floor apartment. I did not clean the sink nook with all the cabinets, nor did I clean the bathroom - neither of those areas needed to be painted. But the walls of the living room, both bedrooms and the cooking/dining area were all scrubbed. The area behind the stove I attacked with industrial degreaser, which helped alot, though later apparently not quite enough to make the primer truly happy (the wall was disgusting, and I'd have rather pulled off the paneling than painted it, but I don't have time to deal with whatever might be beneath). So I spent 11 hours scrubbing and scrubbing and scrubbing and scrubbing, but I managed to get through it all.
Friday was predominantly spent masking off the second floor apartment in preparation for spraying. This meant masking off all the windows, doors, ceiling and baseboards to protect from overspray. This went from 7am to 4pm. I then got out the sprayer and did my practice runs on our apartment. Which is a good thing because paint sprayers have quite a learning curve. I got it pretty much figured out by the end of the living room in our apartment. That meant the base coat was very drippy for the living room, but it's easily the most beat up room in either apartment, and will be the first to have the paneling torn off and rehabbed (the paneling is peeling and falling apart in some places).
Saturday from 7am to 2pm was spent masking off the first floor apartment (no need to do the dining area, that was redone by the last owner). And then I got serious with the sprayer. I put a second coat of primer on our terrible living room, which helped quite alot, and then primed the first floor. I then went home, relaxed a little, did a shopping run with the cow for more supplies, and then went back to MP at about 8:30pm to put the top coat on everything. I was miraculously done by 11.
Sunday was spent removing all the masking materials from both apartments, and cleaning up overspray on the floors that shifting drop cloths didn't prevent (had to get it before the paint cured and made it a pain in the ass).
The end result was getting 7 rooms (3 of them quite large) primed and painted in three days. There is naturally some touching up that I need to do - happens any time you use tape, there will inevitably be some paint torn up or not blocked, but all of this is minor detail work and will go quite quickly.
For those interested,
before and after photos can be found here. All told, from Thursday morning to Sunday afternoon I got in 43 hours of work at the house. No wonder I'm tired.
I am now back at work and work through Saturday morning this week. After I get off work I pick up the moving truck, and spend the day packing up a bunch of furniture that me and my family have in storage (or I'm stealing from my rents because they want to get rid of it). I will then sleep long and hard, and drive up to Providence with my ill gotten goods on Sunday. Sunday and Monday will consist of moving in the furniture once I get up there. That is why I describe the apartment as move-in capable, though not move-in ready. The sink nook/cupboards are still filthy, the bathroom needs to be cleaned, there is no stove, there is no shower curtain rod, paint touchup needs to be done, outlets and light switches still need to be replaced. However, it's good enough that furniture can be put in the rooms and we can sorta start moving in. The paint touchup and electrical is all that needs to be taken care of in the living room and two bedrooms (well that and rehanging the doors etc) so that should go pretty quickly, and then those rooms can be properly set up. The sink/cabinets and bathroom will take a little longer, but we're not properly moving out of Paul's current apartment until the end of the week, so we've got some time.
I am tired, and hoping for a slow night, but not really expecting one. It's been pretty busy of late. Haven't seen anything yet, but now I have two on the way. Hopefully they'll be easy to treat outpatients. Here's hoping. It would be nice to get a nap tonight, since I woke up at 9am, and wasn't able to get a nap later in the day because my furnace was getting it's annual tune-up (he was supposed to get there by 11am, but got there at 2:30... at least he called in the morning to warn me). So yeah, nappage would be nice, but we'll just have to see.
