Off the top of my Head

Hi!
Just something to help keep me on pace.  Nothing deep or nothing from the books.  (Sorry!)

Used this pic taken of our Christmas Tree last year as the cover image for the newsletter.

Anyway I just finished printing out copies of the December issue of the REAR ENGINE REVIEW so they can go out in Monday's mail.  Usually as I'm involved in such a process, I realize how much easier it is to do newsletters today than it was a decade or more ago.  The thing that makes it easier, of course, is the computer.  One can draft, compose, edit, and do all those writerly things with a fair amount of ease.  But the biggest aid in it all is that most of the folks that get the newsletters have e-mail.  It's so much easier now to send them out.  Right now we have about twenty-five people in the Inland Northwest Corvair Club and I only have to print and mail three copies.  Spokane Authors, for whom I also do the newsletter has even more people and still I only need to print and mail a handful of copies.  That saves time, saves paper and ink, and as well saves on the price of postage.
Years ago, before I took over either newsletter I remember filling in for the regular editor of the time.  Even the act of printing was more involved, and there were times I'd have to take a disk with the newsletter on it to a shop to get things printed.  Now I can set my printer to print each page and corrolate them so all I have to do is staple them together, seal them, add address labels and stamps and send them on their way.  I can remember printing say forty copies of the first page, turning them all over and printing forty copies of the second page and so on.  Then it was a matter of building each issue up from stacks of pages sitting on the living room floor and hoping that when I got done I wasn't short a page somewhere due to a page sticking to the one above it and me not noticing..

So I actually completed the newsletter earlier today and e-mailed it, plus copies of other things to the members.  Then I sent the newsletter only to folks outside the club, members of other Corvair Clubs, the National organization, as well as friends family, classmates, and so on.  Later this evening I printed out five copies and have three ready to mail.  Two go to members and the third to another local car club.  Definitely a lot easier.  And cheaper too, which is one reason I believe both the Corvair Club and the Writers Group have not had to raise dues in a long time.  If we still mailed out the majority of copies we probably couldn't afford it, nor could we send to people on the so called outside.
