War has been declared against us. I can't say I'm surprised. People will use any excuse to make war to further their own ambitions. I wonder just how many of Risath's people actually care that their crown prince has died. It isn't as if they don't have a second heir to inherit the throne. Perhaps it's spiteful and cold of me but they are in far better shape than we would be if we lost our king.

But in some ways it's a relief. There has a been political tension between our nations for a century. The situation has been a powder keg waiting to ignite at the smallest spark for decades, despite my labors and the labors of others toward building peace. The current generation is much too young and inexperienced to rule with wisdom. Even our own king, with all of his promise, has his share of moments of youthful folly.

I've lost respect for the King of Risath, not that he inspired much faith and trust in the first place. I'd hoped he wouldn't be so foolish and selfish as to inflict his grief and anguish on others but he has and his people, as well as ours, will pay the price for his suffering. King Nanjiroh has proven himself to be unfit as a ruler. The assassin's choice in targets was most unfortunate; had he chosen to strike down the king rather than the crown prince, perhaps no other lives would've been lost. Now many will die because of one wretched man's inability to restrain his grief.

Too few of us remember the bloodshed from the last war. How many more lives will it take before people realize once again the value of peace?

This is why we can't have nice things.
