My experiment was a success. Suddenly, these books became a great deal more useful. The potential applications of this are staggering and must be explored more thoroughly in the future when I'm not so exhausted. It's been some time since I've ridden a horse this extensively or travelled at such a quick, hard pace. The soreness hasn't quite made its way out of my muscles yet but it will soon enough. In the meantime, I could use some time to recuperate.
I'm not certain I'll have the opportunity to relax at home, however. It seems as if we've acquired a couple of new guests during my absence. An old student of my mother's and her husband moved into one of the guest rooms and will be staying with us indefinitely. I can't say I mind the new additions to the household. The manor can be horribly boring and stagnant at times. Perhaps new occupants will offer a refreshing change of pace.
At long last, that nightmare is over. I'm completely exhausted and I've had a headache for days. The tension is just now starting to leave my muscles. Repeated long soaks in the bath have helped. I've hardly left my room since returning home. After weeks of constant stress and extensive riding, I find myself in desperate need of a little solitude.
I should not be so critical of the king. He is young and given the strength of his attachment to young Shiraishi, I didn't dare ask him to return to the castle where it was safe. His presence was an unwelcome complication to a mission that should have and would have been simple had he simply remained in the castle and entrusted the task to his knights. What should've been a simple search and rescue run turned into a constant protection detail.
And young Keigo handled himself well. Even I was impressed by his ability to stay reasonable in the crisis of a missing loved one. Considering how badly things could have turned out, they turned out remarkably well. Someday King Keigo will grow up and become truly magnificent. I only hope we both live long enough to see that day.
