Signs of trouble, part 3

Feb 12, 2011 20:19

More statues have appeared, scattered along the paths to Ardel and Eider. The locals are finally overtly showing their concern, careful only to walk in groups of three or more. They've become jumpy. There are no more children playing outside, and the windows and doors of all the houses are shut tightly, bits of smoke from the chimneys the only signs of life. Any other day, the streets would be filled with life, but now they are filled with only an increasing number of statues, and the occasional tense, nervous group shuffling toward their destination as quickly as possible.

A young couple walks the road to Ardel, their spirits still high--it is spring, after all, and love is in the air, despite the faint sense of unease beginning to rise up. They pass Called and statues alike, speaking to each other in low voices, and giggling occasionally. Young love is so sweet.

Suddenly, they shriek. Ahead of them, some animal is crawling out of the high weeds that line the road. After a moment of peering critically at the animal, the two relax again, laughing to each other. How silly they were to be surprised. It was only a chicken!

And then they realize they're having trouble moving. By then, alas, it's too late. They've both been turned to stone, becoming just another two statues along the road.

[OOC: As you may have guessed by the statues in Eider and Ardel, there are two cockatrices--one in each town. A post will go up in verty_events tomorrow, allowing those in either city to attack (and hopefully kill) the beasts!]
