The story of Lily, Snow Flower and their fan was interesting and amazing to me from the first chapter. It is difficult for me to imagine a life where my worth is only equal to the sons I bared or my obedience to my husband. Lucky enough to be born in America, I take for granted the luxury of being able to do whatever I want when I want and this book reminded me that for women, this has not always been so. The last chapters had me weeping. The descriptions of foot binding filled me with morbid curiosity and frequently had me running to google for more information and photographs. It amazes me that this practice was ever an accepted part of daily life.
I look forward to reading Peony in Love.
