This always amused me (well, ever since Verizon came into existence)--though I admit to being easily amused.
When I came to the U.S., our phone service service was provided by NYNEX, which I think "stood for" New York-New England X? (and there had been a New England Telephone at some point in the past although I'm not sure if it was engulfed by NYNEX).
I know that NYNEX existed as a direct result of the U.S. government deciding that AT&T shouldn't be allowed to expand into computer technology without breaking up it telephone system. Thus "baby Bells" were born, of which NYNEX was one even though it didn't have Bell in its name. Then the "baby Bells" started aggregating, and NYNEX was subsumed into Bell Atlantic. Which then became Verizon. Yeay.
