G's 6th birthday is coming up and we're having a party for her next Saturday, May 22. She had a couple requests for the party: a scavenger hunt and a pinata. While outside this afternoon, Wendy asked G (our 5yo who was playing in the sandbox) to go inside and bring her out a bottle of water. G went inside and disappeared for half an hour. It was nice and sunny today so we went outside to play in the snow and clean up some of the branches lying in the yard. I made a big snowman in the backyard with the girls, and then a couple of little snowmen perched atop the stumps in the "amphitheater" area. We told the girls yesterday that New Year's Day is a holiday so they could eat any of their leftover Christmas candy they wanted today, and anything left would be thrown out at the end of the day.

Not surprisingly, I awoke this morning to find two children arms deep in their candy buckets and literally bouncing up and down.

G (the 5 year old) told her 4 year old sister this morning as she whisperingly invited her to climb into bed with her: "We're sisters, so we'll always be friends."

The girls are 3.5 (M) and almost 5 years old (G) now and from time to time I have thought about how and when I would introduce them to Star Wars. We try to limit their TV time (they only watch PBS Kids) and we have a variety of kid-friendly DVDs for them. Their bedtime is 8pm, so getting them to watch a 2+hr movie isn’t really going to happen ( Read more... )

Last night, I was discussing parenting with my wife. We agree that we do not want to be the type of parents who tell their children what they can and cannot do. Telling a pubescent child "do not have sex" has pretty much the same effect as telling a toddler "I never want to hear you say that word again!" Gotta keep a close eye on the kids. We just bought a big bottle of Advil capsules and the darn things are the same size and shape as skittles. G has already called them "skittle medicine" which W quickly put a stop to. We don't want any curious kids to try to open the bottle and down a death-load of these things ( Read more... )
