Today I am chillin' and veggin' because Town Meeting is done! Sixteen hours (give or take a couple of hours), from setting up the gym and voting area early in the morning until counting write-in votes and calling all the local TV and Newspapers with results. What a cool idea! It sounds like a very complicated project, too. I admire people with handcraft-talent like yours. I always go looking for quilts in antique stores-- I love looking at them. There's a wonderful tradition and history behind quilting-- it's kind of like writing, in that it preserves individual women's voices, the things they see, etc. And I think you have some idea of how gung-ho I am about that idea! :) Yay for folk art!

I also want to write to the artist, asking him for his permission to use his painting to make the quilt. Isn't that something you have to do, if you are going to make some kind of copy of an artists painting?

I don't think you're in danger of copyright violation if you're making one quilt only, and you don't intend to sell it-- and you said that you'd be doing a much simpler version based on the painting, rather than copying it exactly. I'd say that as long as you credit the original artist and painting, somehow, you're fine. But it can't hurt to ask, and the artist might appreciate hearing about how his work inspired someone else. :)

If you ever get the chance Moro, go to a quilt show. It's is truly amazing looking at all the quilts. They are such amazing forms of artwork that I've really grown to appreciate and love. I also love talking to quilters, listening to them explain their techniques and how (and where) they got their inspirations.

Thanks for the copyright info!
