Heading to LA

I'm heading to LA in about three weeks. It's about time, I've been meaning to get out there for months, and it will be a nice change to get some warm weather and/or earthquakes.

Last weekend I went to see "There Will Be Blood" and the Detroit Pistons. Both were disappointing. Today is my cube-mate's last day here... we're having a pizza party.

Still haven't blogged about Christmas and New Years...

Took my longest vacation ever (two weeks!) over Christmas and New Years-- one week in Michigan, one week in Cancun.

Michigan highlights:
Had dinner in BC with Steve Jones (pookieman), and saw my friend Rando
Played poker on Christmas with Creepy, Doofus and Jonah
Drank lots of Bells from Kalamazoo Brewery

A couple of weird things happened... one, I realized that I'm no longer a Michigander. My sister and her boyfriend were driving me around during the middle of a blizzard, and I was freaking out. I kept thinking of that scene in Annie Hall were Chris Walken is driving... I was positive that we were going to die, even though I used to drive in those conditions all the time. The other strange thing: my aunt's house is like a shrine to me... she must have at least eight framed pictures of me, but none of my siblings, and she's creating a New York themed room in her trailer. I'm flattered, but mostly creeped out. Very odd. Random thoughts-- hanging out in Kalamazoo is like going back to 1996. My family doesn't use the internet, and mostly they don't have cell phones. Also, a they're a bit racist... at least five people gave me unsolicited opinions about how terrible Mexicans are. And a great quote from my aunt: "This might sound racist, but I don't think a black person should be allowed to be president". Ah fun.

After X-mas I went to Mexico with my Dad, step-mom and step-brother. We played tennis, pool and drank a lot. The highlight was seeing the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza (translation "big mouth water magician"). Pretty insane... the scale is immense. The only downside to Mexico-- I felt like a babysitter for my 18 year old step-brother. He's a nice kid, but we're not alike. He doesn't drink and told me his two favorite movies are "Bad Boys 2" and "Good Luck Chuck". On New Years Eve, everyone in the resort was making out... but I was sitting at the table watching the Ball Drop in NYC (at 11pm!) and hanging out with my surly step-brother.. kind of depressing. I'm never going to go away for New Years Eve again. But overall the trip was fun... warm weather, and got to spend some time with dad, which I rarely get to do.
