So I've been AWOl this week--VBS at church every evening. We've been doing the Group VBS called "ROME", and I've been one of the members of the Underground Church. We did up a room like a catacombs, where the kids had to crawl in through a pop-up tent, the room windows and furniture were covered with shredded black garbage sacks, and the only lighting was luminarias and 2 candles; we had a cross on a stand in the middle of the floor, and we wore Bible-times costumes.
Each night we had a skit that we did, complete with sound effects (cave noises, songs, flute music, Roman soldiers marching, etc.), and we interacted with the kids, getting them to tell us what they learned in the other areas that evening. They really did learn a lot--the faith of a child is a magical thing to see. This is what, I believe, Jesus meant when he told his followers that they had to become like little children.
Our Fellowship/Parish Hall was decorated like a Roman marketplace, and kids could make scrolls, necklaces, "buy" stuffed animals, get togas, and learn about life in Roman times. Each night we had supper--pizzas, spaghetti, olives/grapes/raisins, bread, sausage chunks, chicken slices, and fruit juices.
Tonight was the last night, and one little boy came to me in the cave after our skit, and gave me a wooden IXOYE (fish) necklace he'd made in the marketplace.
Talk about warm fuzzies.
