of rants not ranted

a note on formatting: i have a user pic... nearly a year later.

as it is 'that time of year' and people are posting their reflections on the season and its meanings, personal or general, i have often read and wanted to reply but restrained myself deciding that, while my entries are rarely meant as personal reflection vs. newscast, some people may not want to hear whatever it is i decide to tell them to think. (i really don't mean to tell you what to think, i just say what i think... and i'm pretty bossy)

so rather than befouling my many wonderful friends' place, i will write here and welcome any replies, retorts or... other words that begin with R.

the reason (for the season...)
i've offended a number of people recently either by through a variation of an interaction or the telling of a variation of said interaction, reproduced here, i hope this will be taken as part of a greater point to be named later. (this is not an apology)

nice person's away message or message, not specifically to me: happy holidays, lets not forget the REAL reason for the season.. merry CHRISTmas
me (being an ass): yes, thank God for this break...
NPAW: thank God for Jesus and His guidance
me: yes, Jesus died so we could have a break from school... happy solstice.
NPAW: that's not funny

so even typing that was hard for me, because i am such an ass sometimes... (plus it's hard for me to capitolize and God and Jesus and all of their (Their?) pronouns gave me a hard time)

while i do feel a little bad for the assitude and i'm not sure that they deserved my sarcasm (or in the case of hears of this story, deserved to get it second hand), i am also left wondering if i, or anyone with a mind similar to mine on this seasonal subject (though less boldly blasphemous), deserves to be told what to believe, forget or not forget.

here is my point, unsolicited opinions deserve to be responded to, but on this, the touchy subject of religion, i find myself feeling like an ass, yet cannot avoid feeling frustrated that i am self-censoring... moral quandries be damned, i do what i want.

if i am contrary to your personal truths, i am sorry that it might bother you. i will likely make some sarcastic comment or another about it, perhaps even a valid point (unlikely) but i encourage anyone to have back at me and tell me why they think i'm wrong... i'll think you're wrong and we can move past it... or just fight to the death... either way, i'm just happy that you're my friend and able to think for yourself.

cheers,
.db.

a post script:
i love the consumerism that drives this time of year... what a fucked up society we really are!
there is a brilliant line about consumerism as a coping mechanism of a society in a post religious world and it's relation to freud... i can't reproduce it, but its orginal form can be found in the short story "Christmas Freud" by David Rakoff in his book of essays "Fraud" (think: a more wordy David Sedaris.)
