Well, the RPG design Superstar results are in and... I did not qualify.
It might have been a nice piece of exposure, but I'm not too broken up about it. I don't mind giving away my creative product-- but to have it potentially used for commercial purposes without credit is a bit much for the honor of participating in a publicity stunt for the publisher.
Also losing does not preclude me from submitting material on my own toi them or another publisher down the road. The contest winner basically just gets to submit a proposal-- he only gets published if it's good.
Looking at the
winning submissions it's pretty clear I should have been more flavorful and less technical. It's a lesson in creativity vs. doing what you think the judges/editors will like. Always go with creativity. That was a lot of my problem.
I started my writing career at 17 by getting published nationally. Pretty much everything I ever wrote since was framed with the question of where I could sell or market it and those habits are incredibly hard to kill. I think I stopped writing things that I enjoyed because I didn't think anyone else would.
