Today started out better. But I'll contrast with a roundup of yesterday. Topshop has claimed the coveted #1 spot for Fugliest attire in the universe. Skinny strech demin jeans in bananna yellow, grape ape purple and strawberry red. Closthes so thoroughly 80's-esque that they are in fact more reminiscent of the 80's than anything from that era. Think colorful rectangles on black backgrounds and you're there.
I did go to the british museum but I realized that going to a museum by myself was pretty dull. I missed telling Russell to hurry the fuck up. I may have a short attention span but I also need human contact.
Russell however, was in portsmouth all day gleefully enjoying his freedom. When I share his photos you're all going to see a bunch of big impressive hundreds year old ships and say something like "You saw the most interesting things..." I wasn't there for that. Instead of being bored looking at Naval history I finished up Holly Black's Ironside in my hotel room and slept.
We had dinner at Gordon Ramsay... as in the TV chef and celebrity asshole guy. This restaurant has earned the coveted three michelin stars-- which, according to Michelin, is the highest honor a restaurant can ever earn. It is a new echelon of dining above even the most rarified of fancy places. That said, you can safely die without ever having gone there.
My duck was not quite chewy but was slightly less than the buttery tender I'd expect from a *** and $$$$$ establishment-- especially considering I gave the kitchen free license as to its rarity. That minor point aside it was very pleasant, the dishes were interesting : lobster salad with roasted watermelon, monkfish wrapped in duck confit, pineapple mango ravioli... just what you'd expect from a high end modern restaurant, but nothing more.
After blowing about 700 USD on dinner, it was time to dance buyer's remorse away under the twinkling neon lights of G-A-Y. Russell and I are of divided opinion about the evening at this point. I thought the crowd was pretty rough and rotted. They were mostly under 25 as well... which goes with the territory I guess. And that's the crowd that Russell likes so he had no problem with it.
A brief digression on age-- a lot of people as they get older say how they don't feel thier age. I have never felt that way-- I feel 31, it's not like i imagined but it's not like anything else. Growing up was so late and deliberate for me that I'm very aware of the differences in being 21 vs. say 23 or 26 etc. I still feel playful, energetic and imaginative but I am also infinitely more practical, smarter about dealing with people and more experienced in the world. Consequently I don't really feel like I'm 25 anymore and I've had less and less fun going to the same places I loved when I was.
I decided to call it a night. And when noon rolled around I called it morning. I hit covent gardens for some more shopping. It's both more sane and more upscale than oxford street and being able to comfortably walk around the H&M led me to finding quite a few nice things i overlooked in the mad hustle of yesterday.
