Squee-worthy stuff on iPlayer this week :D

Not been posting much this week. Sorry about that. Some mild laptop troubles making it hard to post. Nothing serious, just infuriating. >:| But I'm enduring it because I just had to squee about some things that have been on BBC iPlayer this week.

First, Sherlock. I missed it when it was on TV the last couple of weeks, so I pretty much marathoned all three episodes today. And what can I say, except OMG SO AMAZING ASDJAJSKSL WHY ONLY THREE EPISODES WHYYYYY?

Ahem.

Seriously, though, it was brilliant. Thrilling, clever, funny, and - from what I could see - very true to the spirit of the books. I actually liked it more than the new movie, which I found weirdly underwhelming, for reasons I still can't work out. :( Anyway, each mystery was so satisfying and so well-written and have I raved about the Moff and Gatiss here before because I really should have because I love their writing OMG. Also, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freedman were just superb - wonderful chemistry! I've not read the books (but I will, I will, just as soon as I've managed to make a dent in my towering ziggurat of a TBR pile!) so I'm sure there must have been plenty of shout-outs to the original canon that I missed, but it definitely didn't detract. And the ways in which they added the modern touches, like Holmes's - Sherlock's - nicotine patches. And that bit in the first episode where Watson refuses to believe that Holmes could be a druggie and just Holmes's "Shut up." XD

And oh! oh! One of the scenes near the very beginning was shot in Russell Square, which was just along from our hotel. I was watching and suddenly went, "Hey, that's that café where I had breakfast! And that's the fountain! OMG YAY!"

But let's get to the important stuff: the Holmes/Watson slashiness. It was wonderful! They called each other by their first names for a start, which was a bit startling at first, but you quickly get used to it. Also great was how it was lampshaded by the writers, with several characters hinting at it and Watson being all, "It's not like that!" I may have squee'd ever so slightly when they move into 221B and their landlady (who's adorable!) asked if they'd be sleeping in separate bedrooms, and they were so taken aback. And that scene in the café... so cute and awkward and... *squeeeee* And in the second episode where Holmes crashes Watson's date (granted, they were trying to catch a killer, but still). And all the mutual life-saving that was going on, and the way Holmes looked out the window to watch Watson leave after their argument at the beginning of episode three... yeah, I think I've made my point. I'm going to have to see if there's a fandom, as soon as I've got my laptop sorted out. :)

Also, since episode three ended on a cliffhanger - and what a cliffhanger it was! - there's hope for a second series! Fingers crossed we can have more episodes next time. In the meantime, I checked Amazon.co.uk, and the DVD comes out on the 30th. I'll be snapping it up!

Also, there's some new series on BBC1 called The Deep, about some mysteeeerious goings-on on a submarine and it's completely ridiculous and WTF and I've got absolutely no idea what the hell's supposed to be going on, but it has Tobias Menzies (ie., Brutus from Rome) in it, so yeah, I had to watch it. He's all enigmatic and suspicious and at the end of the first episode it looks like he might have killed someone OMG. "Brutus?!" I hear you say. "Kill someone? That's crazy talk!" IKR? There'll probably be some twist in the tale, but for now just let me make jokes about how they were totally threatening the Republic so that's why he did it. (Look, I'm easily amused. Leave me alone.)

And speaking of Brutus (and, of course, a certain lean and hungry co-conspirator of his)...

Whilst perusing iPlayer's top picks a few days ago, I came across something that made me squee so loudly I think I may have broken the sound barrier. I was going through the scrollbar, and suddenly I go, "Hm. That looks like John Gielgud." So I clicked it, and lo, it was John Gielgud. In a period drama from the early '80s called The Shooting Party. I'd never heard of it, but decided I'd watch, 'cause hey - Gielgud's in it and Gielgud is epic. But before I did I checked out the cast list and JAMES MASON IS IN THIS MOVIE TOO I CAN'T CONTAIN MY EXCITEMENT YOU HAVE NO IDEA OMG.

So, you better believe I watched the hell outta this film. It's set just before the outbreak of WWI, set during a shooting party (never!) at a lord's (that is, James Mason's) country residence, and it's all about the crumbling of the old upper-class order. Gielgud plays an animal rights campaigner (oh, Cassius, always the activist!) whose path crosses Mason's when he crashes their shoot-fest. And he gives Mason a pamphlet which doesn't say "Brutus, thou sleep'st" (though it totally should've) and they have a conversation. The scene's on YouTube, just by the by. (I am so not going to to try embedding, not with my laptop playing up the way it is.) Anyway, since they're both old and adorable in it, am I allowed to make a "lead on our days to age" joke? No? *sigh* Okay.

Should also mention that James Mason's character has a bust of a Roman in his study, which he refers to as "Julius Caesar". I CAN'T HANDLE THIS U GUISE.

Watching this, however, did have a rather unexpected side-effect of making me really, really want some sort of early twentieth century AU/reincarnation Julius Caesar fic. Dear brain - why?

And that concludes my massive fangirl squeeing for today. Thank you for your time. I'm going to sign off now before I'm tempted to do violence to my computer.

iplayer, james mason, awesome people, awesome things, sherlock/john, tobias menzies, fangirl squee, tv, john gielgud, slash, sherlock (bbc), the shooting party
