there's also some sneaky lilo and stylimshaw in here (in addition to the zerrie) but i figured you wouldn't mind :*
it was a graveyard smash, 960 words [1/2]
Zayn is not particularly interested in the whole Halloween thing. Carving pumpkins has never been his personal form of artistic expression, and costumes, though fun enough for fancy dress parties, are hard and not always the most fun.
But then Perrie gets it in her head that she’s going to have the best Halloween ever, and she drags Niall into it, and then suddenly all the Little Mix girls and the rest of the lads are plotting this huge haunted house extravaganza at Harry’s new place. “You sort out the fake cobweb,” Perrie says, thrusting a huge armful of some kind of fibre into Zayn’s arms before running off to assist a laughing Jesy with a string of Halloween-themed fairy lights.
Zayn is tempted to dump the cobweb stuff and go hide in the kitchen, but when he gets there, Harry and Niall are wielding huge knives as they attack a pile of pumpkins, cutting off the tops and scooping out the insides and separating the seeds - “I’m going to make some well delicious spicy roasted pumpkin seeds,” Niall tells Zayn, as he stabs a pumpkin with an almost terrifying amount of force, so Zayn just nods and passes on through, quickly.
“Liam,” he says, as he comes across the boy in question. Liam seems to have spilled fake blood all down his front. “Have you got 999 on speed dial? Someone gave Harry and Niall knives.”
“On it, thanks,” Liam says, making a face at the state of his shirt. “Oooh, are you doing the cobwebs?”
“Not you, too,” Zayn moans, because even though his best mates are here and having a great time, part of him still wants to skive off. “Yeah, I guess.”
“Think they’d look good in a mess over Hazza’s bed,” Liam says, winking, and well, there’s an idea.
“Cheers,” Zayn says, and he heads on, now with a destination in mind. He waves two fingers at Liam as he goes, to indicate he's heard it when Liam calls out for Zayn to send Louis his way if he runs into him.
“Oh, can you set that down a tick and help?” Jade asks, as Zayn reaches the landing on the top of the stairs. When he looks, she and Leigh-Anne are struggling to stick a tack into the head of a glow-in-the-dark skeleton that Leigh is holding high up on the wall. He shrugs, dumps the cobwebs on top of the chair they have handy, presumably for stand on, and pushes the tack in with his thumb. Jade grins at him and he nods back, picking up the cobwebs and carrying on.
Louis is in Harry’s room when he gets there, fooling around with something on Harry’s chest of drawers. “Oh, hello,” he says, looking up. “What’s up?”
“Turning Harry’s bed into a spider nest, I suppose,” Zayn says, shrugging and putting the bundle of cobweb down on Harry’s pillow. “You?”
“Nothing,” Louis says, but he has a cagey expression on his face so Zayn raises an eyebrow at him. Louis sighs. “I’ve just put in one of those Halloween sound effects boxes on Harry’s underwear drawer so that the button gets depressed every time he closes it all the way.”
“So he’ll never hear it?” Zayn says. He can’t help a smile, because - Harry doesn’t generally make use of his underwear drawer.
“Except for when Nick is here, exactly,” Louis says. He smirks. “That will be interesting.”
“Suppose so,” Zayn says, appreciatively. He starts picking out filaments of the cobweb fiber, catching some on Harry’s curtain rod and spreading it all across the wall and over onto the bed. “Your boyfriend was looking for you, by the way. Looks like he’s been mauled by that bottle of fake blood Leigh-Anne brought with her today.”
“Excellent,” Louis says, and he pats Zayn on his shoulder as he heads out. “Good luck with making Jade’s spiders a happy home.”
He’s just finished creating a cobweb that extends from the corner of Harry’s room all the way across his bed and onto the floor in a tangle of white polyester threads when Perrie bursts in. “There you are,” she says, smiling wide. “Liam said you might be here.”
“Hey,” Zayn says, easily. He’s a bit proud of the cobweb by now, so he stands back and waits for Perrie to pass judgement on it.
“It looks great, babe,” Perrie says. She steps closer. “Niall and Harry’ve run out for beers, Nick, and curry takeaway for all of us. Not necessarily in that order.”
“I expect Nick’s mostly for Harry,” Zayn says. "Rather than all of us."
Perrie laughs, and Zayn has to take a moment to appreciate how beautiful his girlfriend is when she loses herself to laughter. “Probably," she says. "Louis has got Liam’s shirt hidden and said something about licking all the fake blood off of his chest, so of course Jesy’s sat in the bathroom watching them clean up.”
“Of course,” Zayn agrees. Perrie is close enough for him to snag his arm around her waist, so he does. He loves how his heart still beats faster around her, even after dating for months and months. “And Jade and Leigh?”
Perrie smiles, slow and wide. “In the kitchen making sure Niall’s seeds don’t burn and doing some washing-up.”
“So they’re all downstairs, then,” Zayn says, raising his eyebrows and turning to face Perrie head-on.
“And busy,” she says, smirking, and leans up for a kiss.
“Maybe this haunted house shite wasn’t such a bad idea,” Zayn mumbles, against her lips, and Perrie laughs again.
“None of my ideas are bad, babe,” she says, poking him in chest. “I’ve got another great one to run past you, too.”
“Does it involve the guest bedroom?” Zayn asks, hopefully, and smiles as Perrie nods and leans in for another kiss.
