Plot and Counterplot
There has been some rumbling ever since the election of 2004 that Karl Rove had a... secret plan to rig that election, and that eventually he would try it again.
It is entirely possible that there was an attempt to re-do the crash-Ohio-counters-and-reroute-ballots-through-Tennessee plan that worked so well in '04.
But someone was watching. Those hacktivists at Anonymous, who (their claim) found the "tunnels" Rove had set up and put something of their own design in the way.

I wouldn't put it past either side of this story being true.
