The whole Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman thing? Not on board. Sorry. I think she's a great actress...in her genre. She is not near serious enough for the role that is required. Catwoman isn't a one-note character and I've yet to see Anne do anything serious and I like it. Yes, I saw Brokeback. Michelle was the female star in that. (Someone I would have, oddly, been okay with being Catwoman because she can ride the crazy train of modern Catwoman's vulnerability.) I've seen Becoming Jane. Not nearly as impressive as people claimed. Nor was Rachel Getting Married. Should she stick to things like Bride Wars? I'm all about that. She plays the romantic lead in a non-earthshattering role well. Much like Kate Hudson. I feel they chose her based on the "IT factor" and what it brings on nomination season (ie, the industry likes her so she has a chance of winning something out of the billion awards out there). Not the talent-for-the-role factor. Nolan has a very...grim, gritty feel to his Batman movies. They're not shiny, or surface-level. I can't see Hathaway doing the role. Sorry. And I say this as someone who does enjoy her work when it fits in her abilities.
And for the love of God, please, everyone stop saying "Well, people hated Heath and look how that turned out." I'm sorry, but Heath had one hell of a range on screen before being cast. He could be playful while completely unhinged. And that's been shown throughout his film history. It's not an either/or equation, people. Nor is it a Catherine Tate situation. Most people in the US were not aware of who she was, thus we judged her based on an episode of Who. Once we had other things to judge, we found her much more appealing. Anne Hathaway has been in the public eye for enough years that the audience has seen in her various roles before, with different attempted genres, worldwide.
Yes, I love Catwoman. A whole lot. I think she's interesting because she can flip a tail and become enemy or ally and back again without a lot of moral quandry. She's got two personas and sometimes they mesh or don't. There's a lot there, psychologically, if you take away that godawful goggle look. But. This isn't said as a "Catwoman fan." This above has been put because I've seen Anne Hathaway in a quite a few roles and I don't think she can play vulnerable but sexy well.
As I told
ninepointfivemm and we compared her: she's a very very refined, polished Jessica Wakefield. Just look at her. Dates an ultra-rich Bruce. Fights with an ultra-rich Bruce. Is a beautiful sociopath that has no trouble using feminine wiles to get what she wants. Doesn't mind playing dirty - and is excellent at it. Knows how to chum up to the wealthy to get favors done. Queen of the World personality.
Anne Hathaway can't pull it off.
