Good and Bad sci-fi: LOST vs Star Trek

I saw the new Star Trek last night. While it's not a disaster, it's not especially good either. The casting is spot on and some of the characters, especially young McCoy, are pitch perfect. However the actual plot itself isn't very convincing and seemed arbitrary to me. If this weren't a vehicle for the re-imagining of one of the most beloved ( Read more... )

What was so great about it other then it was the New Star Trek? Sure it has great Special Effects, it has some good action scenes, but to what end?

So A romulan uses mysterious "red matter" and to create black holes, which are fully capable of DESTROYING entire stars and planets, but are safe enough for him as personal time/space portal repeatedly? Young Spock jettisons Kirk onto an ice planet for no reason other then as a cheap excuse for kirk to get chased by unnecessary monsters and then miraculously meet future spock? Uhh, doesn't the enterprise have a brig? It's just all too pat to be taken seriously.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a disaster of an action packed pop-corn flick, but if it didn't have the name 'star trek' attached, it'd be ho-hum at best.

It was definitely fun. That was a major plus. In fact, that is kind of the point of a good movie, enjoyment ( ... )

The real punch in the gut? Both stories were written by the same person :).

Well, not really. JJ Abrams helped kick off LOST and write the first season, and his production company is still attached, but he has no direct connection to the show anymore. It's all Lindelof & Cuse and their writing team, at this point. I'd argue the first season is one of the great seasons of television history, but the show didn't really come into it's full potential until after he left.

Right. But Damon Lindelof was executive producer and uncredited writer on Star Trek.
