I like orange and pumpkins.
When I was a kid I was sure Halloween was on every Friday Thirteenth, whatever the month was. Perhaps it's because of all the imported american Tv series and sitcoms, since they were aired at different times of the year, it seemed to me Halloween was a Holiday that happened very often.
Now I know more about it's origin, and I can see it's more like our Carnevale, just in a different time of the year.
In Italy it started as Pubs and Disco party, at least, that's how I saw it, a few years back.
It's not that big, at all. In fact the only one partying is the american guy who lives at the first floor of my building (I can hear his loud techno music as I type). He's having a masked party nonetheless.
Right before I was leaving from work someone ringed and I went to the door, and there I see two figures with strange faces. I couldn't actually see their features, so I opened the door and a kid voice came out from what I now see is a mask and said "dolcetto o scherzetto". They were trick or treating XD
We are so not used to this and of course we weren't expecting it. So I told them "sorry guys, I guess you'll have to trick us".
They went away with a little frowny "Oh, OK"... I felt so sorry for them.
I guess it will take a few more years for that to actually happen here, if it will ever.
In the last few years it was sort of a tradition to meet with friends and have a scary movie marathon on Halloween. I like that :D though we didn't organized anything this year.
So, I guess the commercialization of the holiday is the downside of it.
But which holiday is not commercial right now?
I just don't like the "you absolutely have to have fun"/social aspect of it. Of any Holiday, really... Of every Friday and Saturday night even.
Damn... it stopped raining and the first floor party moved on the terrace.
Of course my bedroom window is right above it O_o.
They've got annoying laughs and music and big voices... and that's not just a Halloween special!
