Moon River

I'll admit it; I am a huge fan of Sex and the City. It's not a show that pretends it's going to change the world, or leads people on a path of moral goodness...and half the clothes that Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie) wears I wouldn't even dust my house with. So what's the draw? It's entertaining, and appeals to many women because, let's face it; females are very dramatic individuals. But you didn't hear that from me.

In the first episode, Carrie is introduced to Mr. Big; a chance meeting on the street. Shortly after, they begin dating, they break up, they begin dating...and once again, they break up. Carrie goes on to date other people, as does Mr. Big. As a couple seasons go by, the two bump into each other periodically, and everytime they do, Carrie is confronted again and again with her feelings for Big. Though their relationship wasn't perfect, it meant a great deal to her, and she never stopped caring for him.

At the end of Season 4, the two are talking when Big casually mentions that he's leaving New York and moving out to California. Although they don't see each other often, the thought of his absence is disheartening to her. Within a few days, he has packed and left, and suddenly a city of millions seems a little smaller to Carrie.

I guess in addition to the entertainment factor, we are drawn to things that we can relate to.

Safe travels...
