Pairing: Ted Tonks/Andromeda Black
Rating: PG
Word Count: 525
Summary: Ted knows he's a fool.
Author's notes: This was written as a gift for fiery_flamingo. On her Fandom Snowflake Wishlist, she asked for a remix of one of her fics, and I immediately knew which one I wanted to do. This is a remix of What Shall We Die For, which is told from Andromeda's POV. I switched things up to tell Ted's side of the story. Sam is one of the best Black family writers I know, so I encourage everyone to check out her work!

Ted knows he's a fool. His mates have explained (in slow tones, using small words -- as if he were a simpleton) that what he's doing is idiotic. She's a Black, they tell him with hushed words, as if the name alone were enough to call down the wrath from upon high around their heads.

It's alright, they tell him. He's a Muggleborn, he doesn't know. Blacks -- they keep to their own. Blacks marry other worthy purebloods. They don't cavort with those lesser than they. Those whose blood is anything but pure.

(The unspoken implication is that he is lesser).

His dorm mates don't have to tell him. Despite what they think, he's not simple or slow. Ted knows Andromeda is dangerous for him. Her razor-sharp smile; shrewd dark eyes watching him behind a fall of dark hair. The way that smile softens when they're alone (how she softens against him, beneath his hands).

Ted can't help but love her. And he knows, despite the dangers and protests, she feels the same for him.

He brought wildflowers, picked by hand at the edge of the Forbidden Forrest before dawn, to her at breakfast. Handed them to her in front of her sister and friends. Her face was cool and impassive while Narcissa laughed in his face, but she remained silent.

(After breakfast, he watched from a tower window as she let them fall to the earth, one by one).

That night, when they're alone and tucked away behind a tapestry, he can't help but smile when she tells him he can't do things like that.

"If I didn't, I'd never know you care."

Her body surges against his, her hands sliding over his back as she whispers, "I'm here." It feels like she has her small fingers wrapped around his heart, held tight in a vice-like grip. Perhaps she does. Only Andromeda can make him feel as if he's flying and drowning at the same time; hopes high with the promise of what might be, but the truth weighing him down.

His words come slowly as he offers her what she needs: a way out. "Maybe it's not enough anymore, Dromeda." He hates himself for speaking them, his mind a traitor to his heart. He knows what he is to her family; a parasite to be squashed. A nuisance, sullying their daughter with his mudblood taint. Bellatrix could kill him, she's told him.

Without Andromeda, he isn't sure he'd care. It's a melodramatic statement, but he's a fool in love. It's to be expected.

"It has to be, for now." She kisses him softly. Ted cups her face in his large hands, cradling her gently. He can taste the words unsaid on her lips. It gives him hope that she's still here, but he knows this discussion isn't over. It's been put on hold, for now.

Sliding his hands down her sides, his arms circle her slender waist and pull her tight against him. Maybe this will all work out alright. Maybe she'll choose him, love over blood. He knows it would all be worth it.

Does she?
