The air was bitterly cold, the wind sweeping across her face and stinging her cheeks, though Tonks paid it no heed. It was a wonder that the tear tracks on her face hadn't dried into ice, it was that cold. He wasn't here, or if he was, he would push her away. Again. She didn't care, though. She'd spent enough time alone with a bottle of vodka to know that didn't want to be alone anymore.

She reached up to rap her knuckles against the wooden door and waited. Merlin, this was stupid. He was probably asleep; it was just past one in the morning. Most normal people were asleep.

They weren't most people, nor where they anything resembling normal.

The door swung open, and Tonks had to squint as a line of harsh light fell across her face. "Remus?"

"What do you want, Tonks?" Remus asked wearily as he dragged his hand through his ragged hair. His appearance was disheveled and his breath smelled of cheap whiskey, and it made her ache.

"Can- can I come in?" she asked softly, looking up at him through her lashes. "Please, Remus."

The older man sighed and stepped aside so she could pass into the front room of the threadbare flat. Shutting the door behind him, Remus turned and crossed his arms over his chest. "Why are you here?"

Tonks flinched at his tone of voice; harsh and unfeeling, just like it had been the last time they'd spoken. "I missed you," she said finally.

Remus gritted his teeth in an outward attempt to stiffen his resolve against her plaintive tone of voice. "We said we weren't-"

"You said," she swiftly interrupted him, her brown eyes showing an emotion other than sadness for the first time in weeks. "You said we couldn't be together."

"And we can't," he said for what must have been the thirtieth time he'd said those words. "You need someone young and whole, not a monster like me."

"Remus," she whispered as she cut swiftly across the room and grasped his jumper in her hands. "You are not a monster."

"Yes, I am."

She shook her hand and flatted her palms against his chest. "You're not," she repeated. "And I'm tired of being alone. Make me feel again, Remus. Please."

At her murmured plea, he was lost to her, and ducked his head to crush his lips against hers. Her touch, her scent, the memory of how her body felt against his, called to his wolf and made him growl in desire. "Dora."

Whimpering, Tonks let her lips break from his to trail down his neck, biting down on the pulse that thundered beneath her lips. "Remus."

He could deny her no more. Tearing at her clothes, he hauled her up into his arms and collapsed onto the sofa. Material ripped in their haste, but all he could think of was the utter bliss he felt when their bodies joined once more, their coupling rough and furious.

Yes I'd rather hurt than feel nothing at all.
