[x] starlady | Parts make a (non-seamless) whole: This Michel Gondry-directed video for one of the album's tracks, "Crystalline," that features the gameleste, is pretty amazing: And it makes me want to rewatch Charmax's vid Space Girl again, so I did, I did, I did.

[x] Awkward Paws - vid recs, breaking dawn trailer, 30 days of vidding meme - day 28: Tragic Kingdom by missbreese, Disney, multi. Skillfully weaving ~30 Disney sources together into one dizzying ride. The other is an oldie which I've become lately re-addicted to. A Charming Man by giandujakiss, SPN, Castiel, s4 only. It's just so exceptionally chewy, incisive, totally cutting, and the structure, editing and use of lyrics are all things of beauty.

[x] Supernatural Vid Recs - Vid Rec.: Time to rec some oldies... but goodies! I'm thinking I might dig out some of my favs from over the years. Some that you might not have seen. Or ones you have.. but are worth watching again. Let's start with the fabulous lsketch42's The New Face of Sexy"> <---feedback. Total love.

[x] kuwdora | vid rec: Tragic Kingdom (multi Disney): OMG EVERYONE I HAVE A VID REC I bought missbreese in help_nz. And I basically pitched her the song and concept of No Doubt's "Tragic Kingdom" as a Disney multi-vid. Beyond the song and idea I did not give any input, I kind of let her loose on the idea since it's something I had in my vid playlist forever and didn't know what to do with it and kinda hoped she could pull something together. OMG missbreese's result is ASTOUNDING and beyond my wildest dreams! Tragic Kingdom. It's full of magic and terror, the villains and the fairy-tale nobility and our heroes struggling to survive. I LOVE the frantic, coiling sequence of Disney visuals--the anger, puffs of smoke, claws and bones and our heroes find themselves trapped. It has a beautiful flow and some of the parallels are outstanding, you guys. You need to see it to believe it. Go forth and watch! also the title opening/ending is so brilliant I weep with joy, WEEP WITH JOY. It would be an understatement to say how much I LOVE THIS VID.

[x] The Sarah Connor Chronicles Fan Community - rewatch wrap-up: vid recs: And Chaila's I Will Follow, with Weaver's children always makes me flail. :D Same with her Derek Reese and John Connor vids, only with fewer adorable plastic ducklings. Chaila is a bad influence. I can't get away from the Sarah Connor/Lady Gaga connection...

[x] The Sarah Connor Chronicles Fan Community - rewatch wrap-up: vid recs: y'all have already linked many of my favorites. Here are a few more. Sarah: Lost Inside. Cameron: Comfortably Numb. Ensemble piece: We Are.

[x] spn_littlebro - Theme: Visual: Supernatural Animation Artist: Fraggledragon Summary: Dean and Sam Winchester are on the hunt for something that has been killing people in the countryside. But little do they know that they would become the hunted... Genre:Gen Rating: PG Type: Vid Why am I rec'ing this? This is a vid story in 3 parts. It's a caseficvid. It features hurt!Sam, worried (and hurt) Dean, and some awesome animation. Anything else we should know? SPN fans are amazing. But you probably already know that. *g*. Link goes to part one.
tags: spn

[x] spn_littlebro - Theme: Visual: Consequences Artist: MulkEntertainment Summary: The boys check out the Wishing well and the magical coin when Hope wishes for Sam to get struck by lightning. But different to the episodes ending, there are unexpected consequences for Winchester boys after the wishes were reversed. Will Dean be able to save his brother? Genre: SPN, Gen, AU Rating: N/A Type: Vid Why am I rec'ing this? Finally after waiting it's done! And what a wild roller coaster this vidfic was! It's so awesome how she takes scenes and edits them to make a whole new scene and story! The editing is really the star factor here and you'll find yourself sucked into a vidfic! Like fanfiction but in vid form. Anything else we should know? 9 chapters in this VidFic.

[x] spn_littlebro - Theme: Visual: Final Hour Artist: hunter_dany Summary: Sam was poisoned by Meg. After Dean kills her Sam doesn´t feel better. Desperately Dean tries to find a way to save his little brother. He asks Castiel for help, but he´s not strong enough to heal Sam. As if this were not enough for Dean, Sammy is begging the older brother to kill him. Dean won´t give up his brother, but Sammy is feeling worse and worse. Then he passes out and his soul is going to heaven and meets his mom and dad. They want his son to stay, but Dean also fights for his brother. And then the band of the brothers gets a new meaning..... Genre: Wincest Type: Vid Why am I rec'ing this? This vid won the Asylum Europe 2 Video Competition, and while I don't know the other vids that entered the contest, I can say that this one is a deserving victor. It tells the story of how Sam was poisoned by Meg and meets his parents in heaven when at Death's door, despite Dean's best efforts to save him. Great editing and a way of telling the story that's understandable even without knowing it beforehand.
tags: spn

[x] spn_littlebro - Theme: Visual: I Will Protect You (I Promise) Artist: meness07S Summary: Sam was always Dean's responsibility. That went horribly wrong once but was always there to save him before. Genre: SPN, Gen Rating: N/A Type: Vid Why am I rec'ing this? The sadest video surrounding All Hell Breaks Loose. I'm not kidding. It will make you cry every time as you empathize with Dean and scream Sam right along with him. Anything else we should know? Tissue warning MAJOR tissue warning

[x] The Sarah Connor Chronicles Fan Community - rewatch wrap-up: vid recs: for TSCC), but I'll try to narrow it down at least a little bit. Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up) is Chaila's final VidWar vid (and oh look, here's Becka's, because I CAN'T CHOOOOOOOSE), and it's Sarah's relationship to some of the women in her life, and I looooooove it!!! And then, of course, there is Poker Face, which is the most fabulous of serious crack vids. Also, true story: when "Poker Face" comes up on my workout playlist, I always run that much harder because it now makes me think of Sarah being her kickass self. And now we get to the two that just make me flap my hands in incoherent glee because they are everything I love best about this show: Shelter from the Storm is Ellison following Sarah, who is Jesus, vidded to Bob Dylan. IT'S KIND OF MY FAVOURITE THING IN THE UNIVERSE!!!!!!!!!!! Except that Over the Rainbow is ALSO MY FAVOURITE THING IN THE UNIVERSE because Sarah Connor vidded to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is among the most perfect song choices I've ever seen, and it's gorgeous and haunting and oh, Sarah!!! Also, I emphatically second beccatoria's there's a war going on for your mind, sarah, because, just, yes.
tags: tscc

[x] The Sarah Connor Chronicles Fan Community - rewatch wrap-up: vid recs: there's a war going on for your mind, sarah by beccatoria. Sarah and Weaver engage in a rap battle, and all the philosophical implications of the show come out to play. My love for it cannot be textually rendered. Karaoke Soul by gigglemonster. Amazing Derek/Allison(/Cameron) constructed AU. Riot Act by thuviaptarth. An intricate character study of Riley. Howl by beccatoria (Or really, just beccatoria's entire TSCC catalog). A wrenching Jesse vid that really delves into her motivations, a downward spiral of violence. Army of Me by lithiumdoll (download link on page). Sarah, Cameron and John, and what Sarah must make him into. DLZ by bop_radar. A smart and thoughtful ensemble piece. Nobody Loves You by aycheb. James and the unholy family. Ding!Dong! by kiki_miserychic. A fantastically layered Sarah character study. Saraaaaaaaaah

[x] The Sarah Connor Chronicles Fan Community - rewatch wrap-up: vid recs: Land by sweetestdrain, which is a mash up of all Terminator universes and a fantastic vid. (NSFW, as it uses some of the sex scenes from the movies!) Gloria, also by sweetestdrain. Awesome Sarah/Cameron vid. Lost at Sea, by lithiumdoll, a great Jesse character study.

[x] The True Story of Matilda Sweetfuck - Vid recs!: Angie by greensilver (True Blood, Eric/Sookie) Okay, Angie has always been my least favorite Rolling Stones song--in fact, you could safely say I hated it--but now I think that was just because I didn't understand. And Eric makes me understand! When will those clouds all disappear?? I love this vid and I love this show and I love vids that treat this show exactly as seriously as it deserves to be treated. Can't Get Much Wronger [youtube] by WasabiAlchemist (Under the Red Hood, implied Bruce/Jason) Of the many, many Jason Todd vids on Youtube, this might be my favorite. It's sharp and atmospheric and satisfying -- even though it's only 35 seconds long. I even love the creepy lipsync moment. Agh, Jason. (Have I mentioned that grad school is like the worst time ever to get sucked into comics fandom? Goddamn Batman.) Eleventh Dimension by di_br (Doctor Who, season five) Now, it's not that I'm not loving season six -- but I loved every second of season five, and just having Eleven around being quirky and oh so very much the Doctor was a huge breath of fresh air after *mumble mumble*, and this vid reminds me of that feeling. It's a gorgeous, action-packed season five vid that has ALL THE THINGS. And I did so love all the things. (It's worth downloading the mp4 for the shiny, I think.) I'm not #@$*ing around (the free will blues) by lolachrome (Supernatural, Castiel) I haven't even watched the show in ages, so I don't know what's going on in this vid except that Castiel is really NOT fucking around, but -- damn. I love lolachrome's editing, especially the intercutting and use of repeated clips, and the song works so well here. I've rewatched this vid so many times, and every time it ends I feel like I've been taken on a crazy ride. (Also -- setting as metaphor! yes!) Oops, I Did It Again by kuwdora (Chronicles of Narnia, Lucy/Tumnus) I'm just going to leave this link here. What. What? Don't look at me. (OMG MR TUMNUS.)

Whedonverse Women--So What by Valamd This is just what it says on the tin, Whedonverse women kicking ass and taking names. I like the way this vid revels even in the villains, the way it acknowledges how awesome ALL the ladies of the Jossverse are. From Harmony to Saffron to Faith to Lilah--yay! I hesitate to call this vid redemptive because I don't think it's about excusing or redeeming any of these characters but rather glorying in them as they are. Pun intended. Slytherins: Riding Dirty by AccioBook7 I have a very special relationship with this song in that I find it endearingly ridiculous and cannot help but sing along. This video contains high quality footage (which, sadly, I often find not to be the case with Star Trek and HP vids on Youtube; some of the cleverest vids I've seen are virtually unwatchable because the footage quality is so poor, which is a shame), really tight editing, and is a fun watch.

[x] Astrid - Rec of the day: The Riddle by Charmax (Xena: Warrior Princess) characters: Xena, Gabrielle, Ares; dl ( 11.1MB) This vid is an episodic of "The Bitter Suite" (aka one the most awesome hours of tv ever imho...) But I don't know if you even need to be familar with the show or that episode to enjoy the vid - the themes become clear enough through the lyrics, and the visuals speak for themselves. It's an older vid (from 2004) so the picture quality isn't as razor sharp as one has gotten used to but the editing is good and really, this song fits the storyline like it was written for it, both in lyrics and in style. Perfect match!

[x] elisi's humble abode - AGMGTW & LKH recs!: The description that came to my mind for this vid was from Smith and Jones, when the plasmavore talks to the Doctor: "You're quite the funny man. [x] aethel | narnia madness: kuwdora posted a vid the other day about Tumnus being a very bad faun. This vid was not as hilarious to me as it could have been; I sort of thought the same thing the first time I saw this movie. When I watched the movie again a week ago because I had realized that it was James MacAvoy running around in the snow half naked and in hooves, I didn't see the (only in my head) subtext anymore THANK GOODNESS, but of course my new-found innocence was once again destroyed by the vid.

[x] ladysorka: Yes, please.: How did nobody tell me that there was a music video out there starring Natalie Morales and Brit Morgan (ie Wendy and Lacey from the Middleman) (or Lauren from White Collar and somebody named Debbie from True Blood, but I don't watch that), where they're kissing and apparently having the angsty falling out of a relationship? Well, that or Natalie Morales is seriously angsting about her sexuality, I can't quite tell. Either way they both look damn good and this is extremely up my alley. Seriously people. how was this not everywhere when it was posted a year ago? I think I'm going to go watch it again.[Music video for David Lynch's single 'I Know' starring Natalie Morales and Brit Morgan. [x] thingswithwings | more about that speculative fiction poll: I don't understand why Data's Dream doesn't have like 55 votes... maybe because there's no way to watch it online without emailing for the password? When I saw it at VVC, I was moved to tears of awe and wonder and joy. It is the soul of SF. I'm voting for sisabet's Bad Romance, too. This, to me, is not a vid about Smallville; the comics and cartoon footage makes it a vid about the absolute quintessential superhero/archenemy relationship. It is a danceable dissertation on the homoeroticism inherent in one of our central heroic myths. I think there's also something about the current cultural positions of Lady Gaga and costumed superheroes that adds something to this vid, too. I just can't stop watching it.

[x] loligo | Go forth and vote!: I have complicated feelings about comparing fan works with professional works ... I'm finding myself more willing to vote for vids. There aren't that many works of fanfic out there that I feel have some sort of conscious, independent relationship with the SF genre as a whole, outside of their relationship with their source text. I think that's something that is much easier for vids to achieve, and I'm trying to pin down why that is. I think it has to do with the ease of combining multiple sources and multiple media (song + visuals, certainly, but also multiple media within the visuals). So far all the vids that I'm inclined to vote for are multi-source (and that includes sisabet's Clark/Lex Bad Romance vid, with its brilliant, BRILLIANT use of comics and cartoons). Even though these vids are built entirely out of pieces of other works (and in that sense, someone might argue that they were "less original" than fic, because the fanfic author pulls potentially thousands and thousands of original words out of her own brain), I still feel like their stance in relation to the SF genre is more like that of an original work of fiction, and less like fanfic, while still including a uniquely fannish, communal component.

[x] thingswithwings | more about that speculative fiction poll: Afraid of Americans by bironic (fanvid) - this is an astonishingly good Watchmen vid, that both takes in a lot of what Watchmen is doing and that also has a smart critique of it. This vid does things that Watchmen can't, both because of the format of vids in general and because of bironic's willingness to go there, and I love it. Data's Dream by gayle f and morgandawn - this vid, this vid. It summarizes so much about speculative fiction; it's a vid ABOUT spec fic and how it affects us and what it does for us and how it helps us . . . imagine. I will love this vid forever. Plus the frame-narrative is genius. The Future Stops Here by futuransky - Children of Men/V for Vendetta/28 Days Later fanvid. Is the problem just that no one's seen this vid? This vid is overwhelmingly good, and beautiful, and has so much to say about the post-apocalyptic scifi genre. Seriously, if you're able to spare three minutes to watch it, I really recommend that you do so. I love it intensely. And I saw it originally when I'd only seen one of the fandoms in it, so you don't to have seen all those movies to love it. Grapevine Fires by skywaterblue - Star Trek AOS fanvid. This vid contains so much loss, so much mourning, oh my gosh. It makes me cry pretty much every time I watch it. What a fabulous response to the rebooted Star Trek canon.  Handlebars by flummery - this one's doing fine. :) As it should! So I clearly don't need to tell you guys why it's great. Hera Has Six Mommies by tallulah71 - BSG vid. Eeeeep it's so good yall! This vid does queer scifi, oh does it ever. It's so dreamy and strange and atmospheric; I adore this vid.  Hurricane by laura shapiro - Farscape/BSG fanvid. This one's right on the edge - it might go through, it might not - and I think it's totally deserving. Constructed reality crossover lesbian space fighter pilots! Find a word in there that isn't awesome, I ask you. Love is the Plan the Plan is Death (sons and daughters) by futuransky - BSG fanvid. Cylon POV. I think this vid communicates in three minutes everything that BSG wanted to say about the Cylons over five years. And does it better. And freaks me out, and breaks my heart. I love it. Ooh La La by greensilver - The Dead Zone vid. Wait, even if you haven't seen the Dead Zone, come back! This vid is so amazing, does fabulous things with The Dead Zone's portrayals of perception and psychic ability; it's everything I love about the Dead Zone in one gorgeous little package. Give it a shot! Maybe it'll encourage you to watch the Dead Zone, at least. :) Scarlet Ribbons by hazelk - currently down at 7 votes, but dudes have you seen this BtVS vid? Do you know how gorgeous it is, what it does with Buffy canon? It's the kind of myth-weaving I always wished the show were more interested in, made real and beautiful and sad and just . . . expanded, until it fills the whole show canon. Waaaaatch iiiiiiiiiiit Slow Down Gandhi by obsessive24 - one of my favourite BSG vids ever, ever: it's all about Gaeta, and it's about class, and it's about race, and it's about violence and revolution and and and oh my gosh. This vid comforted me greatly in times of post-4x10; it's the narrative I kept wanting to see on the show, and almost saw. Seriously, this is scifi at its best, this vid. Space Girl by charmax - it was doing really well at first, but now it's slowed down and is on the border line. I'm surprised, because this was such a big crowd favourite! And does such cool things with women in scifi, I think. The Temptation of John Sheppard by isagel - currently not making the cut at 7 votes. This is an SGA vid that broke my heart, honestly broke it into little pieces, basically because it's the perfect blending of a scifi concept with a doomed-but-beautiful human relationship. I really wish more people'd vote for it; it's so powerful and so perfectly crafted.  Unnatural Selection by charmax - TSCC/BSG vid of awesome! I voted for this one instead of for Seven Nation Army, but actually this one isn't doing quite as well. Which is a real pity, because I think it's powerful as all hell and says something kind of miraculous when it puts these two canons together

[x] How can I measure up to anyone now after such a love as this? - Something in his eyes is making such a fool of me: I don't even have enough internet connection to watch this right now, but I've seen the earlier iterations and I promise you, there is nothing more magnificent on the internets this morning THAN THIS JARED VID: I Like The Way You Move ~ by the incomparable ash48 *got them moves like Jared*

[x] samvara | Vividcon 2011: Nearly New Part 1 Whole New Way by mresundance. Sherlock Holmes (BBC, 2009 film, ACD canon). Holmes/Watson/Fandom. Epic romance since 1887. Counterpoint (Concerto No 1 in D Major ("Allegro")) by Deejay. The King's Speech. Voices don't have to be vocal. I haven't seen this movie but now I want to, there was so much love in this. Nearly New Part 2 The River Flows in You by jspencer1986. Fingersmith. This is visually beautiful, the music is haunting and it has pretty girls falling love. Better by WiliQueen. Desperate Romantics. Beautiful. Another fandom I'm unfamiliar with and now desperately want to watch. Losing My Religion by akemi42. Supernatural. Castiel struggles with defining his relationships, his faith, his reality. Hee, I probably shouldn't find this amusing but I do. Friends by f1renze. How I Met Your Mother. Pop and lock together. Love the song choice. Things That Go Bump in the Light (Montezuma) by Luminosity. Blueberry. Enigmatic and visually lovely. What About Love by Greensilver. Youngblood.  Don't you want someone to care about you? OK we're gonna get this and we're gonna watch it, possibly back to back with Blades of Glory and it's gonna be FUN Constructed Reality I love this as a genre so if it's your thing, go check them out, my favourite is still probably Papa Don't Preach by Greensilver & Eunice. Doctor Who & Torchwood. Uses a story-specific song to build a non-canon plot. History of Vidding: Vividcon Black Cat by Seah and Margie. The Sentinel. Who says a black cat has to ruin your day? (2002 premiere) This was pure nostalgia. To Touch the Face of God (Nasivern Pi) by Destina. Multi. This kind of makes me want to cry, I am invested :) Triangles, 3-somes, and Trios there still remains the cocaine bottle (We Insist) by skud. Sherlock Holmes (2009). Sherlock Holmes is never alone. (Holmes/Watson/Adler) Let's Misbehave by Greensilver. White Collar.  It's not a crime. It's not even a poor life choice. (Peter hopes.) (Elizabeth/Peter/Neal) Heavy Metal Shock the Monkey by giandujakiss. Hawaii Five-0. On the surface, this is a vid about Five-0 using full immunity and means, but when you look a bit more closely, it's about the way the show fetishizes and glamorizes violence. Yeah, that :) Setting: It's Where You Are All of these are worth seeing and are gorgeously lush in the choice of landscapes or environment. Standouts for me were Ghost of a Shark by SE. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Intercutting landscape and shadowed rooms with the quiet interplay between Jesse James and Robert Ford adds to the vid's overall sense of regret and longing. Compass Points (Comfortable Mystery) by newkidfan. Stargate Atlantis. The construction of new, surreal settings works to alter the story told by what might be, in their original context, familiar clips. Anomie (People Are Strange (Infected Mushroom Mix)) by Charmax. Sherlock (BBC). London serves as the framework for this perspective on societal dysfunction (and also serves as a character in its own right).

This is an inclusive newsletter: I attempt to include all of the vid recs that are publicly posted. It is not, however, exhaustive. If you have suggestions for particular communities or journals to watch (especially ones that use tags) or have specific links to share, please let us know.
