Different Ways of Knowing

#1 Sight - The Sight of You

The evening light fell softly through the half-opened curtains, turning Sara’s pale skin to gold. Sofia cherished moments like this when she could drink in the sight of her lover, sleeping, peaceful.

She loved to watch her working, intense, focused. She loved to watch her with her friends, laughing, happy. She loved to watch her in passion, wanton, wild. And she loved to watch her like this, when the night’s tension was gone, when the horrors seen were forgotten in sleep.

“You’re looking at me again.” Half-opened eyes regarded her with sleepy amusement.

Sofia smiled. “I like looking at you.”

#2 Hearing - Hearing More

As Sara watched from the observation room, Sofia used her interrogation skills and the evidence Sara had collected to nail the driver who had hit a six-year-old boy and fled the scene, leaving the child to die in the street.

Sara listened, her throat tight, as the usually husky, expressive voice became harsh and flat. She could hear all the suppressed rage and disgust that Sofia was feeling and the effort it was costing her to hold it back.

Anyone else would only hear an icily controlled detective doing her job and doing it brilliantly. But Sara could hear more.

#3 Touch - Flushed and Fevered

Sofia frowned as she looked at her girlfriend. “Sara,” she said quietly, “You should go home, sweetie.”

Sara shook her head. “I’m fine,” she protested, her voice raspy.

Sofia rested her palm against Sara’s forehead. “You’re burning up. And you can barely keep your eyes open.”

“I can still work,” Sara argued, unconvincingly.

Sofia raised an eyebrow. “But can you work well?”

When Sara scowled but didn’t respond, Sofia smiled and rubbed her flushed cheek gently. “Go home, sweetie. I’m on overtime already. I’ll be home soon and I’ll pamper you, okay?”

Sara sighed and leaned into Sofia’s hand. “Promise?”

#4 Smell - Lemons and Soap

After a long and trying day, all Sofia wanted when she got home was to hold her girlfriend, rest in her arms, as she breathed in the scent of generic soap, fingerprint powder, subtle shampoo and just Sara.

But that plan was put on hold briefly when Sara came home carrying a bag of lemons and smelling of things neither of them really wanted to think about. After a little while, Sofia joined Sara in the shower and they finally kissed, lips gentle, hands firm on water-slicked bodies, the scent of lemons and soap surrounding them in the steam-filled room.

#5 Taste - Tastes of a Kiss

When Sara kisses her goodbye before work, Sofia tastes of spearmint toothpaste, fresh and sweet.

When they sneak a kiss on their break, Sofia tastes of apple and honeyed glaze, warmth and fun.

When Sara is ready to go home, Sofia is still trying to find a break in her case and their goodbye kiss tastes of coffee, weariness and determination.

When they curl up on the couch after dinner, Sofia’s kiss tastes of spices, contentment and anticipation.

When they’re in bed, Sara can taste herself and Sofia, lust and love, and it is the most intoxicating taste of all.
