Separation of church and state:
Thomas Jefferson stated “in every country and every age, the priest has been hostile to Liberty.” Although religious individuals can claim that religion gives one a basis for the sense of ethics they uphold, the society of America was not founded on the views of theocrats, but on the basis of democracy.
Throughout America, people use their scripture to justify their actions. They go to services and listen to the teachings of their Lord as the service leader interprets them. For thousands of people, this is a natural way of life that, if taken away, would create mass chaos. Individuals are given a reason to behave and follow all mandates of their scripture as the promise of access into “heaven” is granted to all those who are virtuous. With those standards, religion encourages its followers to be righteous and have strong morals. These trustworthy followers and the promise of a divine reward for good deeds make religion seem like a most perfect choice on which to base one’s lifestyle.
On the other hand, with or without religion, good people will do good things, and bad people will do bad things. While religion might instill the values that are necessary to life, people can also teach them to others as well. Society does not need religion to properly inform individuals of the values they should uphold in their lifestyles. Simultaneously, religious views vary with the broad spectrum of faiths that the world offers. With so many choices, who is to say which one is right any more than any other one? With religions competing to be the most successful and to have more members than any other, they also seem to have some odd idea that they should hold some form of influence in the government. In 1777, Thomas Jefferson wrote the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom for the purpose of integrating the idea of separation of church and state into the government in order to be fair to all faiths. In today’s society, Christianity tries to dominate governmental decisions, especially in the areas of gay marriage and abortion. If Christianity claims to be fair and states they want equality for all mankind, would it not make sense that they would support separation of church and state, in order to be fair to all denominations? Considering the diversity of faith that America supports, no single religion can take over the government and make the majority of the decisions. It will create chaos and inequality, the very things our Founding Fathers strove to overcome. With this in mind, religion should be extricated from society as it is beginning to unravel the very ideas of democracy and equality our founding fathers worked so hard to achieve, the same ideas that make up the basis of American government. It would not reflect America well to have its whole social order collapse due to people trying to create a theocracy. That is not what this country was designed for, but indeed the exact opposite.
Although completely abolishing religion would cause torrents of chaos, keeping it also causes chaos. Instead, religion should be acknowledged and honored, but should also be kept out of governmental decisions in an effort to be fair to all, and also in an effort to maintain the ideals our founding fathers fought to uphold so long ago.
(We had to write a politcal essay for English a few weeks ago, and this is what I wrote. It is something I feel very strongly about, and I'm sorry it's quite a bit more than a paragraph, but I feel that, sometimes, you can't put limits on your opinions.)

If you were given a chance to look behind V's mask, would you? In all reality, yes and no. My curiousity would be much too strong and I would like love to satisfy it.. but then again, what he looked like gave nothing to him as a person. It was his ideas that defined him, and as I always believe you should never judge a book by it's cover, in the end I probably wouldn't.
Would you have joined V's revolution? Absolutely.. but in a nonviolent way. I don't agree with violence in justifying your ideas because I see that if you use violence, you have practically negated your whole cause. Violence really doesn't solve anything.
