We lost a legend July 30. We only had her for 89 years, but Nichelle Nichols brightened everyone's life with her wit, her beauty, and her total class. I've never heard anyone, even people who hate science fiction, say anything negative about that woman.

I'd like to share one of my favorite memories of Nichelle, from when I saw her speak at MOC-Con in Greenville. I believe it was 1989 if my memory and Wikipedia serves me.

I gathered my courage and asked Nichelle if she would share a little-known story with us, about how the lighting director of Star Trek loved her looks and always made sure Lt. Uhura was lit with a soft, beautiful glow. Nichelle laughed and shared this with us:

One day Jerry Finnerman looked over at the shot they'd just set up and saw that the special spotlight for Uhura was pointed in the wrong direction, not shining on Nichelle's face. The technical term for that is "black."

So Jerry started yelling, "Dammit, she's black, she's black, she's black!"

And then ... he realized what he was saying. Jerry - and everyone else - slowly turned to look at Nichelle Nichols, still sitting calmly at her station on the Enterprise set.

Nichelle just looked up at Jerry with those big, soft eyes, and said "... but comely."

What a lady we've lost!
