the day after "A Song of Ice and Fire"

Feb 27, 2011 15:29

I wrote this as a comment on an aGoT post by  queenofthorns last week. If I am going to start writing more on my LJ, I figured I should maybe post a copy here too.

This was written the morning after I finished the published four books of a Song of Ice and Fire. I hadn't read anything about the books yet, so these are my own, untainted thoughts. I have been enjoying what I've read so far - it always pleasantly surprises me to be reminded how 10 people can look at the same picture and have 10 wildly different interpretations. I am particularly intrigued with some of the observations and cant wait to reread to see what I think this time around with my new lens on. But that's for another post...

SPOILER WARNING! Don't read ahead if you haven't read asoiaf because you really SHOULD read them and one of the beauties of grrm's writing is the plot twists that he throws your way at the most unexpected moments:

Wheew! I finished the 4th book last night and rushed here in the morning to read up on your thoughts:
-queenofthorns : I completely agree with your assessment of Dani's naiveté when dealing with the Dothraki and mmr.
I am surprised to see love for Sansa. While I came to dislike her less, I could never quite forgive her for telling Cersei of Ned Stark's plans. Her second life with Littlefinger is hard to stomach for me too. Yeah yeah, I know, what choice did she have? I still can't help but think neither her mom nor dad would have made the choices she made, as a sense of honor seems so essential to who they are. I guess they died for it but I liked them for it as well.
- While I came to love Jon, despite the early whineyness, I didn't like his baby switcheroo, at least the part where he neglected to tell Sam. I am a bit weary of the foreshadowing of the "tough" decisions he will have to make as the Lord Commander
- Arya. I love Arya! What a little fighter! She is blind now? Nooo. One of my friends claims being blind will help her hone her mad assassin skills but I hope that's not where GRRM is going
- Jaime: I loved how not only he changed as a person but our perception of his past actions changed too. I couldn't help but think Ned would have actually liked him and could have been a mentor had there not been a mountain of bias and bad blood due to family in the way.
- Cersei: one of the things I didn't like in the 4th book was you could clearly see her mistakes and the disaster in the horizon. In most all other character arcs, and hers in the past too, we were surprised. I didn't like her folly being so spelled out
- what happened to little rickon??
- why won't Catelyn Stark listen to Brienne? So I take it you guys think she survives?
- Tyrion: I actually liked him in many ways. Is that strange? Not sure what the general sentiment is for Tyrion
- Mormont had a message for his son. I wonder if his son will ever get it. I can see him facing D. again when the fight with the Others goes underway
- what was the whole thing with stolen keys at Oldtown? Are we to now take it that the maesters manipulated the kings and kingmakers and there is no free will anywhere??
Sorry for making this long. Perhaps I should take this to my own LJ :)
I should also read up on what the fandom's been talking about
