I've been an active reader and a pretty active commenter on LJ but I've hardly posted anything on my own journal page yet. Part of it is because I am not as good of a writer as a lot of the people that I follow and part of it is because I am a little late to a lot of my recent obsessions, most importantly BSG and aGoT.
This is the first time I am involved with any sort of fandom, either online or off, and it's been interesting to learn what seems like a new language (OTP, canon, au, het, beta etc.) and a true goldmine for a ferocious and often obsessive reader like myself, to discover the immensely talented and thoughtful folks that write, create and share their work online. It also has been a little bit like living a teen movie cliche. You know, the one where the new girl at school shows up at the high school cafeteria for the first time. Trying to understand the lay of the land and find where she may fit... To that last point, I don't quite know where I fit yet.
First with BSG and my Kara/Lee infatuation particularly, and now aGoT/ asoiaf, I've done what I always do with books, movies and music: immersing myself first, trying to form my own opinion before I go and seek those of others. Like reading the foreword of a book after finishing it, giving myself the opportunity to interpret it on my own first followed by the chance to compare it with others to discover unexpected perspectives or welcome similarities afterwards. With these two, there weren't too many people among my "real friends" I could have had those conversations with (being late to the game has this disadvantage too) and my mind had lingered on those stories for too long for me to give up and move on to the next one without digging in first. So yay for the like-minded folks live and kicking on LJ!
