*poik!*

So I've been feeling just a little bit fannish again lately, and have been lurking around these parts. Via my Roku box, I've discovered the joy of Crunchyroll on my flatscreen TV, and I've been watching a smidgen of anime. Right now I'm pretty much just following two series; one is No. 6, which I'm quite enjoying, although I think I enjoy canis_m's spoileriffic rants even more. ^_^ The other one, and the one that's actually eaten my brain cell, is Blue Exorcist.

Ahhh, classic shounen bliss. The premise, very briefly, is that Okumura Rin, aged fifteen, suddenly discovers that he's actually the son of Satan. Satan kills Rin's adoptive father, whereupon Rin decides that he's not going to put up with this crap and that he's going to become an exorcist and kick Satan's ass. Rin's twin brother, Yukio, is already an exorcist, having been training in secret since they were seven. Together, they fight demons!

Reasons I adore this series:

- I love Rin. He's like the perfect storm of brash shounen hero; angsty, broody teen; and hopeless goofball. Not smart, not skillful or well-trained (he admits himself that his only productive skill is cooking), and kind of a walking disaster area, what he's got going for him is a good heart, awesome raw power, and the fierce will to use that power for good.

- Said power is only tentatively under Rin's control and constantly threatens to break free and wreak havoc, oh noes! The struggle to contain vast and potentially dangerous power happens to be one of my kinks. In related kink, Rin also tends to forget that he's a lot stronger than the average human. I can do things with this.

- The main characters are all interestingly flawed and complex, and they have good chemistry with each other. Well, Shiemi is a bit of the "I know I'm kind of useless but I'm really want to help you so I'll do my best!! Even if it's just hanging up the laundry!" archetype. With the addition of big boobs. But I'll forgive her. Rin and Yukio's relationship is particularly fraught. Unsurprisingly, this twincest couple is probably the most popular in the series. (And no, I don't swing that way.)

- "I will get stronger!" Yes, it's a cliche so old that its gray hairs have gray hairs, but I can't resist it anyway.

- Lord Mephisto Pheles makes me squee and cackle in delight. Especially the scene when he's facing down the Vatican's Grigori council with his smooth, smooth talking and his go-for-your-throat smile. I have no idea whose side he's on or what stakes he's playing for, but I love it.

- Rin's rival (of course there must be a rival), Suguro Ryuuji, aka Bon. Looks like a thug, is actually a top student and heir to an ancient temple in Kyoto. Can memorize entire books of the bible. Extremely tsundere, emphasis on the tsun, but will go through fire and water and giant bloodsucking moths for his friends. I didn't think I was going to like him *at all,* and there he went grumpily making his way into my heart.

- Rin's tail. I AM WEAK AGAINST THE TAIL.

Sadly, the anime has wandered into filler territory--the manga is still very early in its career--and...I'm really not sure I trust it to do right by the characters and the world. The last episode I've seen was kind of boneheaded, and I've heard worse about the next one. On the other hand, I've read the manga up through chapter 27, and it looks like it's going to some interesting places. (Though the beginning of the Impure King arc had me going, What? What? Who are all these new characters, and why should I care? It grew on me, though.) Trouble is, I got hooked with the anime, so my head canon is having cognitive dissonance trying to bridge the two media. I pretty much have to label my fanfic "generic fangirl continuity," because it spins off in its own demented direction.

...yes, I'm writing fanfic for this. After a couple of years (?) of hiatus. Go me!

Of course I am writing with fujoshi goggles firmly intact. Below is my pairing of choice, Bon/Rin:

Bon is the one with the hair. And yes, that's a cat on Rin's head. I really think Bon's expression says it all.

Another shot of the two:

Rin is wearing Bon's hair clip. The slash, it writes itself.

Unfortunately I haven't yet found much in the fandom to sink my teeth into. I'm on the main LJ community; I don't really know where else people hang out these days. On Tumblr? On Facebook? Bleah. My interest of course is mostly other fanfic, and pickings are rather slim, especially since I've gotten very fussy over the years. I've been reduced to trawling the Pit, where at least every other fic is OC-centric--I've been avoiding those categorically, as the odds are good that they're all heinous. (And then there was "An Unexpected End: Rin Okumura is going to the World Trade Center for a job." OH NO YOU DI'N'T.)

It's kind of sad to find yourself rereading stuff that you yourself have written in an effort to get the hit that you crave....
