Friday night was rather depressing. There's a building near the mouth of the river called the Spanish Arch. It was built in the 1400's or something to protect the traders from Spain. There was a vigil there for all the victims of the Madrid bombing. There were about 2000 people there and lots of them had candles and we had a 5 minute silence at ( Read more... )

Terrorism has been going on in Spain forever. ETA has killed hundreds of civilians in the last few years. I am only angry because it makes news now because it's "relevant" to the rest of the world. They find a conveniently placed bus with detanators and verses from the Qur'an near the site, so it gets publicised...everywhere. Personally, I don't think it's Al Qaeda's style. If these Islamic fundamentalists are so obsessed with becoming martyrs for Allah, why would they stake out in a bus with detanators? It may be a conspiracy, but I won't go so far as to say so.
At this point, I believe the whole situation has gone beyond the "what should we do?" question. It seems that while we have terrorism around (it always has been, and it probably always will be) with world leaders attempting to make a stance using military means, the cycle will perpetuate anyway. I can only pray for an answer to this. What I try to remember is not to get angry, because it's not about revenge. I know that it is more important to help those out that have been affected by terrorism -- whether it is because their families have been destroyed directly by some attack, or because their leader is cutting domestic outreach programs in favour of beefing up his military might to "prevent" another attack.
I don't think we will see an answer to the problem in our time, so I will continue to take the path I've always taken and do what I can to help those left behind. I hope I'm not the only one that thinks this way.
