UNDER AGED KIDDIES LISTEN UP!

Jul 14, 2005 15:46

Please don't read my dirty fics if you aren't legal for them... please. I like to treat people based on the way they behave and their interests rather than strictly their age, because I've met plenty of 18 year olds who were very mature, and a lot of 40 year olds who weren't. However, I don't want to get into legal trouble. And I don't want ( Read more... )

I wouldn't get too upset about it. No one expects you to do an age check on every reader that comes by. As long as you stick up the proper rating and warnings, I think that's all you should and can be expected to do.

Kids will lie about their age. And will find and look at porn.

Just... don't beat yourself up over it okay? You are too nice of a person for that.

Thanks.

Having flashbacks to ff.net when I realized I'd got a gushing review for a slashy Pawns chapter from a girl who was 13 years old. Oh, that made my fucking day.

Cuz I got this little autism problem, I don't always pick up on where the appropriate and inappropriate line is, so when I find out after the fact that I've crossed it in a bad way, I tend to go medieval on myself.

I'm a terrible person. I saw a 13 at my LJ once and then promptly forgot about it....

I understand that. I'm pretty good at beating up on myself for the smallest mistake I make too. *sighs*

I hope you don't let this wreck your evening... *hugs again*

I have someone whose friended me who is 13. I'm resisting the urge to check back to see if she's commented on my raunchier fics. I really shouldn't.

Don't beat yourself up about it! It isn't your fault if some kids are too stupid or ignorant to take notice of wanrings and ratings and the like.

It isn't your job to babysit these kids. If they're underage, their parents should be keeping an eye on what they're looking at online.

*hugs*

Thing is it didn't even OCCURR to me to figure out how old this person was. Not until herongale pointed it out. Then I was like, geez, I was pushing porn on a minor. Way to go Mace.

I do a lot of squick in my writing, including writing about minors having sex, but the one thing that has sort of made this acceptable in my mind is that no actual minors are involved. And hell, if Mercedes Lackey can do it and get it published, it can't be that bad, right? Right? Writing rape and raping aren't the same thing.

Anyway, this is what I justify my actions with, but sometimes my world goes all sideways on me and I wonder about my moral fiber.

Maybe it's just the way I was brought up, but I always knew that if I asked for something I wasn't old enough to see or looked/read something online that I wasn't old enough to read despite warnings then it was my own silly fault. I have a mental block when it comes to remembering that not everyone thinks that way. I will blame it on the person who ignored warnings, not the person who wrote/drew that thing.

As far as I'm concerned, it's just writing. No-one got hurt because you wrote it. Writing violence, writing rape, is not the same as the act. And legal ages for sex vary on the country. I happily imagine that Amestris is like the UK so 16 is fine.

I know this, too, which is part of the reason I'm confused and a bit paranoid right now.

Back in Hawaii, hell, the age of CONCENT was like 15. I had pregnant students in my 9th grade class -- some of them had parental approval of their boyfriends. It's a messy thing.

I'm currently living in Oregon, where concent is 18. Period. Very hard and fast on that one.

I don't know. Maybe I shouldn't have stirred up this ants nest. Maybe ignorance is bliss.

Ah -- I'm sorry. <3

I should really start taking into consideration of whom's fics I'm reading, and whether or not they would appreciate it. Granted, I don't think you've corrupted me. I've been exposed to this sort of content for a few years, and quite frankly, it doesn't disturb me.

However, given that you've expressed discomfort at minors reading your work (fifteen year old in the hizzouse), I'll leave off. But I'm still going to leave you on my friend's list, if only because you seem like an interesting and nice person, and it's neat to read your journal.

^^; Sorry about that. I really didn't realize.

Chasing you entirely away isn't my goal -- some of my fics are ok -- Pawns is PG-13.

But my NC-17 stuff.... Yeah. That bothers me.

-nod- Perfectly understandable. I know where you're coming from, too. Writing mature content and then realizing younger people are reading it isn't exactly the best feeling in the book -- I had that happen with a more violent fic of mine and finding an ten year old was reading it. Partially why I left FF.net. I didn't like the idea of someone that much younger reading something that graphic, violence-wise, especially if it was written by me.

I doubt it was me specifically that pushed you to this, but again, I'm really sorry about that. ^^; I'll try to be more considerate in the future.

I'll be 18 in January. My mother not only is aware of what I read, she doesn't care at all. She'd rather I sit on my ass reading porn than go out and have random sex with people I carely know. And she certainly doesn't understand my love of yaoi, but she doesn't mind.

And she's proof-read some of my darker stuff, so she knows what I write. XD

Hahaa. Your mom sounds wicked. <3 While my parents are newly aware of what I read, they're still like, "Dude. 'Kay. Just because you're allowed to read it, doesn't mean I wanna know. -flail-"

It's actually really funny seeing grown adults go "NONONO MY EARS THEY BURN STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP! -plugs ears- I'm not LISTENINNNNG..."

hehe! Wer're birthday buddies! I'll be 18 in January too. Which brings up my otehr question. Do you consider underage for NC-17 to be 17 or 18? Because it does say NC-17. And I always figured that meant 17. But what's your take on it? I don't want to go against your wishes if you're really uncomfortable with it.
