Sunrise Lakes

Following hiking up the Lower Cathedral Lake, we headed back up to the main trail and continued up to the upper lake.  The trail around this lake has been rerouted to save the meadow which gives the impression at first that we are headed for a much more difficult looking pass.  Once over the pass, the landscape was a little more stark.  The trail kept fairly high as the group divided by hiking speed into pairs and a single out in front as we headed to the Sunrise Lakes.  It goes down to the High Sierra Camp, then there is a junction with the trail to the lakes over a short ridge.  The first pair were headed for the camp to see if they could get a spoon, but then decided to head over a slightly lower ridge before the junction to cut off a few miles.  In a domino effect, all the pairs headed over the shorter ridge.  Cairns along the way showed the routes that others had taken before us.  We came first to a small pond with ducks, then the upper Sunrise Lake.  I was traveling with the fisherman of the group and encouraged her to go ahead and try to catch her supper.  The mosquitoes were rather numerous, so I settled down with arms covered and deet applied before sketching a bit of the lake.

After landing a nice, big fish that was the only one of the trip, we continued down to the second lake along the trail after a short glimpse at a third one that this lake drains into.  The others had stopped there, rather than "a little past" as planned, and were swimming around in it.  More fishing was tried, but although one came close to being landed, no more fish were had.
