Oh, but for future reference, does it only have casual John/other? Isn't this the one where Rodney goes back in time or so to support John in the past. I was very intrigued by the concept, but too afraid to read for fear of John/other.

It's John through time, growing up with Rodney appearing all the time to save him. Very minor John/other only obliquely mentioned (and small canon bit with Nancy). He's pretty focused on Rodney. It's also Rodney trying to get John's life right without really knowing what to do. I loved the story.

Okay, I've found a few recs that might be what you're looking for. I primarily went for John/Rodney fics that I know are long with no explicit sex and happy/hopeful endings, so I'm not as sure about the other criteria.

But Wait, There's More!, by lavvyan
Nice mix of humor and angst - John and Rodney doing infomercial sales, but their relationship has a touch of angst to it.

Wide Open Ocean, by setissma
Kind of a sad story (starts with John's mother dying of cancer), but has a good ending.

Strangers on a Six Train, by eye-queue
Sweet and fun story, definitely gets at the relationship-slowly-builds-over-time-no-thanks-to-a-clueless-Rodney idea.

Animalia Sequence, by Leah.
John and Rodney get turned into penguins. (One of the earlier penguin!SGA fics, as far as I know.) There are intimations of other potential relationships, but they turn out to be not true.
