I’m sorry to say I’m going to have to start this week on a tragic note, because as you may have heard already, artist MIKE WIERINGO passed away yesterday at the age of 44 following a heart attack. Wieringo was as close to a living legend as it gets, having contributed to beloved runs on FANTASTIC FOUR, SPIDER-MAN, and the creator owned TELLOS. Wieringo, a VCU alumnus, was apparently a vegetarian and exercise aficionado, so his death comes as a huge shock. He was reportedly one of the nicest guys in the business and the comics industry will be weaker for losing him. We at Velocity Comics send his friends and family our most sincere condolences.

HOW DO I FOLLOW THAT?: By announcing a big party, of course! THURSDAY AUGUST 30TH will be the official RELEASE PARTY FOR STRANGE DETECTIVE TALES #3. SDT #3 completes the miniseries and is brought to us by hometown heroes JESSE BAUSCH AND JIM CALLAHAN, and also features work by JUSTIN ALICEA, RUSSEL PAULETTE, PATRICK GODFREY and ME. The festivities begin at VELOCITY COMICS at 7pm and will feature signings by the creators, an art show featuring work by everyone involved, and enough fun to kill a large horse. Then, at 9pm the action moves down the street to local tavern EMPIRE where there will be more art and precious, precious booze. Mark your calendar for AUGUST 30TH and don’t miss out!

SECOND CITY AFLAME! With news, that is! Wizardworld Chicago took place over the weekend, and during a brief scheduled break from patting themselves on the back MARVEL announced that MARK MILLAR AND BRIAN HITCH will be re-uniting in January as the new creative team of THE FANTASTIC FOUR. This is some of the best news I’ve heard all year, and to put that in perspective--my sister got engaged at Christmas and my blood test came back HIV free last week! That’s how messed up I am! MESSED UP FOR COMICS!

PLEASE EXCUSE: We’re doing a little renovating around the store this week, so please excuse any construction mess, smeared blood, OR profane screaming that you might encounter while perusing the shelves. Also, please don’t throw peanuts at RAWN GANDY if you see him slaving away on our new shelving. I know it’s funny but his handlers insist that it’s cruel.

PICKS:
BOOSTER GOLD #1: It’s a taste of the 80’s this week as Booster Gold returns to his own ongoing title, straight from the pages of 52. GEOFF JOHNS and newcomer JEFF KATZ figure out what he’s going to say and DAN JURGEONS draws all the punching. It looks like BG is going to be doing some time traveling, and he needs your help! Only high sales can help him complete his greatest adventure ever!

FLASH #231: MARK WAID and WALLY WEST and OLD NUMBERING return! Where has Wally been since the end of INFINITE CRISIS? Find out eventually! The Flash series took some missteps over the last year or so, but this issue should get things back on track. Check it out now so that in six months when Wizard magazine recommends it you’ll feel ahead of the curve.

New this week from IMAGE COMICS comes KILLING GIRL#1. An all-new crime story from ROCKETO artist FRANK ESPINOSA and written by GLEN BRUNSWICK. The preview pages are all beautiful and we all know that first issues ALWAYS skyrocket in value, so don’t miss out! In 25 years you can sell this baby to afford a mail-order wife!

TERROR INC #1-MARVEL presents all new mini-series written by DAVE LAPHAM and featuring a long forgotten character from the dark days of the mid-1990’s!
