HEY YOU GUYS: TB here, back from my jaunt to the coast to attend the SAN DIEGO INTERNATIONAL COMICON. It was an exhausting, exhilirating time-dreams came true, hearts were broken, laps were danced-and now I have returned from these trials a new man, filled with the light of truth and knowledge of my ultimate mission here in this world of men, to spread word of new releases and upcoming events in newsletter form. Join me, won’t you, for an illuminating look into the week to come!
BUTT FIRST: A word from our venerated leader, PKG, regarding books you can ONLY GET AT VELOCITY COMICS (For now).
SAN DIEGO PICKS! These are all books that were picked up at the San Diego Comicon that are currently unavailable through other means. All are worth a look!
*THE BLOT by Tom Neely ($14.95): As soon as I opened up this book I knew I had to get a pile to bring to the shop. A tale of psychological horror done in a cartoon style reminiscent of EC Segar and early Disney cartoons, this has got to be one of the most assured graphic novel debuts I’ve ever seen. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
*5 by Becky Cloonan, Vasilis Lolos, Gabriel Ba, Fabio Moon and Rafael Grampa ($5.00): What a winner… this little mini features a series of stories by these creators about each other. welcome to the new generation of A-list artists, all in one book!
*GHOULASH by Sam Hiti ($10.00): ‘Tiempos Finales’ is an all-time favorite of mine, so I was super excited to see a new book from master illustrator Hiti. This one’s more of a collection of monster drawings (with a good chunk of John Rambo thrown in. That’s not a typo.), but the creator says there is a connective thread running through it that rewards scrutiny.
*MINIS by Becky Cloonan ($20.00): Before she was a rising superstar, Becky Cloonan was a prolific minicomic creator. Here is your one-stop shop to watch her talent evolve to the oft-Eisner nominated artist she has become.
*PULPHOPE by Paul Pope ($29.95): We technically got this a day or two before the show, but since it officially made its debut there I figure we can include it. This is a high-end coffee table art book featuring essays, unseen work, sketches, process studies and foreign illustration pieces by Paul Pope, one of the most important comic makers working today. I don’t know what else I need to say to sell it. It’s a must for lovers of the comic art medium.

ALAN MOORE COMPLETE WILDCATS TPB: Collecting issues 21-34 of the first series and featuring the art of TRAVIS CHAREST, Mat Broome and Ryan Benjamin! Alan Moore shook the Wildstorm universe like a wild pony in these issues, bringing the titular team back to their roots and introducing SLEEPER master villain, TAO.
BLACK ADAM THE DARK AGE #1: Jutting from the pages of the late, lamented 52 comes this tale of obsession and horror! This mini features the powerful pencils of DOUG MANKHE and threatens to fill in the gaps between the end of 52 and the start of COUNTDOWN. Check it out, you have nothing to lose!!
UN-MEN #1: The good people at VERTIGO have been nice enough to provide us with an ALL NEW ONGOING SERIES spinning from the pages of SWAMP THING. The Un-Men are a bunch of freaks, and they want you to come have a freaky good time with them! Cover artist TOMER HANUKA will be there, will you?
NOTES FOR A WAR STORY TPB- Gipi! Gipi! Gipi! The name is fun to howl at your enemies, but it’s even more fun to read the books created by the man bearing the name. This all new TPB tells the tale of three friends sinking into a life of crime while attempting to get through in a war torn land.
