Double Meaning
Oh my, I can't get over it.
I've read a few Downton Abbey fanfictions and in one there was a scene taken from the first episode. When the Duke of whatever visits Downton and we learn that Thomas knows him and had in fact an affair with him.
I can't get over that one sentence (I watched that part of the episode again just to be sure it's really what is said). Thomas tries to renew their aquaintance so to speak but the Duke is reluctant.
Thomas: "You came here to be with me."
Duke: "Among other reasons. And besides... one swallow doesn't make a summer."
I nearly spilled my coffee hearing that.
You see, I know that it's a saying, and it exists in German as well. "Eine Schwalbe macht noch keinen Sommer."
But 'swallow' means something else as well, doesn't it? So my mind instantly went into the gutter and I pictured the Duke and Thomas in an intimate situation and the Duke swallowing... well, you know.
I think it's funny. And based on what it said between the lines before that part it's not so unlikely that the Duke did indeed do that. See, before he said something like: "I just can't see it working, can you? And, we don't seem to have the basis of a certain master relationship, do we?"
Or maybe he says 'basis of a servant/master relationship' which would prove my point even more. I don't think that Thomas would be a servant in bed. And he would certainly not let anyone else be his master, not in those circumstances.
