In a coffee shop in a city, which is every coffee shop in every city....

I left for Pittsburgh with my family this morning, and I'm always reminded of how much I hate Indiana every time I travel through it. For instance, I think that Indiana may be the USA's largest supplier of "abortion stops a beating heart" and "try Jesus" billboards. Yeah, fun stuff, let me tell you. ;-) Oh, and I think I counted over 50 Bush/ ( Read more... )

Happy birthday to your grandma!

I have to laugh thinking of Margaret Cho on 'Sesame Street' - I think I knew she made an appearance, but what sprang up in my mind just now is her bit about Gwen. Not really Elmo-material ;)

My Grandma says thanks!

Yeah, the Margaret Cho thing was a bit, uh...unconventional for Sesame Street to say the least. ;-) Anyway, enjoy what's left of the weekend!

That totally bugs me about Indiana as well... My husband--who was born and lived in NYC most of his life--was totally weirded out when we moved here... the religion thing still frightens him a little :)

Yeah, it's definitely kinda scary. Nonetheless, I'm always slightly surprised at the frequency of which the signs show up along the highway. : /

Hey there. Hmmm, I never got this message e-mailed to me. If I would have gotten it sooner, I definitely would have planned to meet up with you or something! :-) Anyway, I'm not sure if I'm going to be downtown again this week, but I'll definitely let you know.I have the whole "obligatory visits to relatives" thing that I have to deal with, and there isn't a lot of time to do much else when I'm here, so....But anyway, can I have your cell phone number in case I make any last minute plans to head downtown? Oh, how close are you to the Cranberry area? In any case, if we can't meet up this time, I visit pretty often so maybe we can meet up next time or something. :-)

And speaking of Ani's coffee shops...

I was reading a book called Deep Community. I got it at Falcon Ridge. And there was a line in it about why people choose the music they do. I paraphrase:

"Even the youngest among us arent necessarily fooled by the glitzy showboat of pop music. One needly only look at the declining number of artists, each year, that represent the top 100 songs, to see that fewer artists from bigger lables are selling songs. In contrast, folk artists offer real songs about real times. People tend to turn to it as a source of truth and reality, rather than a fluffy, insubstantial entertainment source. Folk music, while a hard genre to name, is a community based, real form of expression that people come to through introduction by others"

I thought immediately of you.

Wow, that's really interesting. Thanks a lot for sharing it with me! I definitely have to go and buy a copy of that book now, it definitely looks like something that I'd enjoy. Thanks! By the way, it's cool that you were at Falcon Ridge, even though I'm incredibly jealous. ;-)
