where do the monkeys come from?

The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) has been campaigning for over 100 years against the use of animals in experimentation with the vision to "create a world where nobody wants or believes we need to experiment on animals". They are a highly respected organisation that operates peacefully to lobby the government and educate the community on issues to do with animal experimentation.

One issue that many people don't consider when they think about animal experimentation is where do the animals involved come from. Some animals are bred to have certain traits or are genetically modified in some way as is required for the experiments they are used from, for example the onco mouse, which has been genetically modified to have a higher likelihood of developing cancer. Others will be born as part of the experiment like Dolly the cloned sheep. Sometimes animals are surrended by their owners such as slow greyhounds, or they come from pounds. And sometimes they are imported from other areas, for example cane toads from Queensland being sent to labs in other areas of Australia.

Recently the BUAV did an investigation on where macaque monkeys (an endangered species) that are used in labs around the world are sourced from. Please watch this short video - it doesn't have anything graphic in it - to see where these monkeys come from.
