Last year Animal Aid did an undercover investigation at one of the slaughterhouses for organic meat. The slaughterhouse was certified with The Soil Association the leading organic group in the UK (and the third biggest certifier of organic products in the world), who have high welfare standards for keeping and slaughtering animals. The 40 hours of ( Read more... )

Why does this not surprise me?

I always find it very uncomfortable when someone says they try to eat "humane" or "ethical" meat. It seems to be a further disconnect or a type of denial; I wonder exactly what they would find humane about being killed for food if it was their own body on the slaughterhouse floor.

It's totally denial. Noone is happy about being killed, regardless of how "happy" their life is.

You should post this to veganpeople (if you haven't already, haven't read all of my FL yet).

This is (part of) why I'm vegan - you just can't trust humans (as a species) to interact with non-human animals appropriately, even if those humans are supposed to be (relatively) "good" - so the only option is to limit human interaction with animals (and in particular, animals' dependence on humans for their survival) as much as possible.

Animal Aid are brilliant. I can't wait to move to the UK and get involved with them!

If only more of the animal rights groups here would go out and get some hard data and expose the cruelties in the free range and "humane" meat industries, they might have a case, instead of just criticising each other which only leads to animosity and a waste of energy. Looks like the UK is still ahead of Australia in that regard.

Animal Aid are very, very good. Their education program especially. Let me know when you are thinking of moving and I can put you in touch with people.

In the late 90s ALWA got footage of barn-laid egg system (which was being accredited and promoted by the RSPCA at the time), problem was the media didn't really want to touch it, and it was back before you could just chuck things on the internet.

But not everything is better here- trying to find a coffee shop that has soy milk is a bloody pain!

Trip's cancelled.

Yes, all the AL groups now have stuff on the RSPCA. It was the ALNSW website about the RSPCA/Pace agreement that inspired me go vegan in the first place! ALACT have actually tried to take the RSPCA and Pace Farms to court for false labelling I believe.

But did they all have stuff in the late 90s?

I know ALSA have done lots of stuff that has made the media (maybe 5 years ago) and that encouraged change in RSPCA SA and ticked off all the animal abusers who were RSPCA members too.

Hi there.

You'll find on Facebook I've recommended a person called Ricki to you.

She was my boss in Broome and is currently living in Sydney. She's vegan and very active in campaigning too - I think you two will get along. :)
