Last year Animal Aid did an undercover investigation at one of the slaughterhouses for organic meat. The slaughterhouse was certified with The Soil Association the leading organic group in the UK (and the third biggest certifier of organic products in the world), who have high welfare standards for keeping and slaughtering animals. The 40 hours of undercover footage show regulations are repeatedly broken and animals were not stunned, beaten, kicked and had their throats slit when stunning had not rendered the animal unconscious. All of this at a "humane", organic slaughterhouse. As a result three employees have been suspended, the slaughterhouse in question has had their organic status suspended and their is a strong possibility of charges being laid by the Meat Hygiene Service (MHS)- the government body that regulates slaughterhouses.
"The MHS has prosecuted 33 abattoirs and slaughterers over the past three years. They have also ordered 166 slaughterhouses to tighten up their procedures on 455 separate occasions over the same period. That equates to three serious breaches every single week."
Interestingly this story was covered today in that conservative of newspapers- The Daily Mail. The full article can be read
here.
The findings of the investigation from Animal Aid can be found
here along with the
press release that also has links to the footage.
I've been quite fond of the poet Coral Hull's poem,
The New Age Abattoir which touches on the oxymoron that is "humane" slaughter.
