ACT caged egg ban turned down.

Sep 17, 2009 14:35

The proposed ban on caged eggs in the ACT was voted down today .

"The Government backed away from the ban saying the battery hen industry would simply move across the border into New South Wales"

A friend of mine summed it up with:

If I saw some bloke mistreating a dog in my yard I'd do something about it not ignore it on the grounds that he'd simply go elsewhere and continue to beat the dog.

But there will be new requirements that eggs needed to be labelled so buyers knew how they were produced and they need to be labelled explictly as such, a complete watering down of the proposed legislation.

Why do I doubt they will have pictures of dead, dying and featherless birds in the shops?

EDIT:  PACE (who own the battery hen farm in Belconnen) pay a mere $486 in lease for it's farm each year from the ACT Government !
