http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-13947163 So this is sort of interesting. I live in Holland and there are a number of weird layers. Basically, this law says that animals cannot be slaughtered without being stunned. This was law was proposed by The Party for the Animals (yes they have a political party and yes they have parliament seats).
Initially I was psyched about this and posted this on my facebook, but I got a response from a muslim friend telling me that this is a bunch of crap sending me to a youtube video showing that Halal is not as cruel as factory farming.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quhVxLUwiBw. Now this dude has some seriously flawed logic, but there is no denying that these animals are treated better than factory farmers so it is weird to pass such a law if the law was really about the animals.
The underlying thing is that there is a lot of racism towards muslim immigrants especially among those in the leading party in parliament, so though it was started benignly I highly doubt that those that voted for the law were totally doing it for the animals.
So how much do you guys know about this? I have been searching and have actually found some pretty conflicting results on weather Halal methods of slaughtering cause more or less pain than stun gun slaughtering. I would hope that The Party for the Animals did this on benevolent grounds rather than just racist grounds, so I guess maybe they did the right research.
A nice quote from the article:"If we no longer have people who can do ritual slaughter in the Netherlands, we will stop eating meat," - YES GOOD!
