I don't know if your pups like stuffed toys, but my Jack Russell Terrier mix could gnaw on something soft for hours. Since he fancies spreading stuffing all over my apartment, I've taken to buying him stuffed animas without stuffing! He loves them and can chew for hours.
Some dogs can work on Kongs for a long time, especially if they're filled with something delicious like peanut butter. My dog wasn't a fan.
Oh, Dillinger (the Dobe) LOVES stuffed animals, but he is SO hard on them. We bought him a similar toy at a local pet supply store, and he had decapitated and de-tailed it within a day. Damn thing was $28! lol
But he sure loves them when he's destroying them. The MinPins, though, do NOT play with toys; they seem to act like it's beneath them. ;)
Dillinger went through a Kong phase, but after we spent over $50 in Kongs are fillings and such, he stopped caring. That was over a month ago, though, so I may try to break them out again. Still need to find edible for the MinPins, though...picky little things.
I used to have one of those balls with a little hole in it that you fill with treats so they have to roll it around to get them out. Depends how smart your dog is though... mine learned to pick it up and shake all of the treats out. A kong with peanut butter in it kept him amused for a while too.
I think I'll try a Kong with the Dobe again (he used to love them, then he started ignoring them). The MinPins won't bother with anything non-edible, though. If they have to work for it, they just go pout.
Granted, it's mainly the Dobe whom I need to keep occupied, but if he has food and they don't, they steal it from him. Because they are brats.
It's not vegan.. but it is all-natural (big plus) and as far as I can tell, cruelty-free - there are a few small companies that make dog chews out of shed deer antlers (as in, they find shed deer antlers on the ground, sanitize them, and cut the spikes off). Apparently dogs really like them, they're safe, and they last a long time. I can't think of the names of the companies off my head, but you can find them on eBay.
I'd never heard of those! That actually sounds REALLY promising - sounds like something he would love. Thank you so much for the heads-up! I'm going to try to hunt those down. :)
The MinPins do the same thing! It's adorable after the fact, but a bit annoying as they're trying to revive you like you're their favorite salt lick. ;)
I know you're looking for treats, but my friend has an enormous dog who goes absolutely insane for this thing: http://www.asseenontvguys.com/crazy-critters-fox.aspx ... he will literally chew on it for HOURS. And the squeaking isn't that annoying either. It's also really durable so you can play dog-tug-o-war etc with it too. You might be able to buy yourself some time with it.
