I have a friend who is a vegan and works at a non-vegan cafe, she has to bake pastries etc. with butter because that is what their boss wants, in fact most things they serve are not even vegetarian, however they are very respectful of her decision to not eat the non-vegan food. Moreover she convinced them to add a few vegan items, e.g. they have a vegan tofu scramble special on their weekend brunch and tofu "pulled pork" sandwich as an option, by making them for them to try and show them that it is actually very very tasty, so in a way she contributed to at least providing vegan options for people who frequent the cafe.. I just thought I'd throw that as an idea, I know it all depends on the people you're working with, but I thought it was pretty inspiring.
oh that's one thing i'm excited for (maybe) happening! in my interview i mentioned i love to cook and they said they love creativity coming from their employees, and maybe i could show them some good recipes. i didn't mention i'm vegan, but i can make some damn good food omnis love, so... :)
I worked for starbucks back in the day, and the most grief I got was a little look of confusion and disappointment when I wouldn't sample the pastries. it's no big deal! just make sure to be honest, confident and assertive (not passive) and no one should really question you.
i have worked in non-vegan kitchens (that do have heaps of vegan options) for a few years. when i go to job interviews i always say that i will not taste non vegan food. I say it straight up so that they know that before they hire me. Its never been a real problem for me. When i cook something that needs tasting i just get someone else to taste it, whether it be another chef or one of the floor or bar staff. After i've cooked something once or twice i am quite good at being able to replicate the seasonings based on memory.
I have a non-vegan job in the food industry as well - but taste testing hasn't been a problem. My co-workers all know, and don't offer anything non-vegan to me
