why I'm leaving this community

Jan 03, 2009 13:49

I had issues with LJ in general, and decided to delete my personal blog. I don't know many vegans, so I reached out to the virtual world for some moral support from fellow vegans ( Read more... )

Nice flouncing. Honestly, if you have a problem just leave. No need to call everyone out when you yourself are acting in a dickish manner(by that I mean this post).

I don't know the particular issue that this person is talking about, but enough people have left this community because of this issue that it bears taking seriously.

An old friend of mine used to tell me that if 1 person tells you there's a problem, you don't necessarily need to listen. But if 3 people all say the same thing, you should start paying attention.

A lot more than 3 vegans have said that this group has turned into an unkind place. Including one of the most honored members of the community - I think that was her username. I have been on this community for 5 years and I've seen the content become more abusive to people.

I wish that this community was more welcoming to people in the early stages of veganism, people who need help making a commitment, people who are just curious even. There is veganhaven already for being hardcore. There is no good community on LJ for people who are just learning. vegetarianism actively discourages talk about the benefits of veganism ( ... )

Honestly, despite my love of snark I've never given a rude comment in this comm or told anyone 'you're not vegan, go eat a steak'. This person is being a dick. I have no reason to take them seriously. If you can't handle a little criticism(not even directed at the OP as it wasn't even their post they refer to in their reasoning) the internet is not for you.

Please don't take the message away from this community that the majority are psychos, etc. etc ( ... )

But, like many of the other people on here who are calmer, I've got a lot of other stuff going on in my life and this community has sort of faded into the background.

Agreed. I used to be a lot more active here, but the aggro just isn't worth it. Mostly I just scroll on by, and the times I haven't there are prominent comments reminding me of why I usually do.

Honestly, I miss the helpful and informative posts by the likes of vgnwtch and the place has got even worse since she left. It's a shame, but I really don't think it will change. Perhaps a new vegan lj comm wouldn't hurt if enough effort was made.

"No wonder the majority of the world thinks vegans are psycho"

Okay, what? Everyone I run into think it's a positive thing and they wish they had the WILLPOWER to be vegan. I don't know what world you come from but don't go assuming shit. This was rude and hateful. I don't know what happened to you but that doesn't mean you have the right to attack the whole vegan community.

I don't think he/she was being hateful or attacking the vegan community? honestly, that's the only opinion that I've ever encountered in the world of vegans as well (outside of other vegan individuals themselves)

You guys live in horrible sheltered places then. And yes, IMO she was being rude and assuming. Not cool in my book.

Agreed, honestly, I live outside of Portland, OR, pretty much the best place for vegans...but still most people react in a negative manner. They think I'm nuts or just plain old stupid for being vegan.

I don't get these "waaaahhhhhhh, you're meanies, I'm leaving this community" type of posts. The honorable thing would have been to just leave the community quietly.

see my post above - this community has gotten so many of the same message. People don't just do this for the hell of it. There have been many people hurt, discouraged and attacked by this community and that's sad. Whereas if this were just one or two people, it might be a fluke or their problem, I think this is at the point where it's the community's problem with the sheer volume of posts like this.

Ah, didn't know. I've only been a member here for a like a month or so.

There's also a whole lot of people who think it's just fine as is. Should we not listen to their opinions?
