I listen to a lot of PR, and today I heard of a rather interesting chimpanzee named Victoria (or possibly Vicky).
I've forgotten a majority of what tests they put her through to gain more knowledge on Chimpanzee sentience and how they rationalize their motives. But one test they put her through had an interesting outcome.
She was made to connect over 300 or so photos of humans and chimpanzees to their match on a board. Each time she put every photo in the right place, and she even got them right when she was given photos where the chimps and humans were wearing different clothes or had different expressions (the photos she had to match them to had monotone expressions and clothing).
But one thing she did constantly baffled scientists, she would place her own photo with the human side, and leave her own portrait blank.
Sometimes I forget how complex and intellectual animals can be. :(
