ok so the only class that is available for me to take in order to graduate Summer (I'm at The Ohio State Univ) is Anatomy including CAT DISSECTION. I emailed the prof to ask if I could still pass without doing this. Awaiting her response ( Read more... )

this makes me think...

how many veg*ns go into the medical field and end up having to dissect a HUMAN? i wonder if people would feel any different because the person donated their body to science?...

i probably wouldn't do it just because i'm squeemish!...

but the kitties didn't donate their bodies after they were done with them! that is the diff!

i wouldn't want to donate my bod cause i don't want ppl making light of my death and my body etc. :( its bad enough thinking of morticians treating my death like the next bod on the slab :(

Yeah me too! I've heard stories about how med students respond to all that, and eugh.

I think I would rather dissect a cadaver.
Atleast I would know that it was their wish that their body be there.
I use to think I would be really squeemish, but not after reading Stiff by Mary Roach. I am in no rush to test that theory though.

But what if you were studying to be a veterinary surgeon? I'm not trying to be controversial or anything, I was just considering that since human cadavers have their place in medicine, what about learning from animal bodies?

For the record, I would be far too squeamish to consider doing it (although helping animals is yay!), but I wonder if it does have its place.

In the UK I took Biomedical Science at university and never once had to dissect anything. I once missed a lab for a biomedical molecular biology class that involved dissecting a locust, but that was optional anyway.

I can't speak for all schools, but even if you're not morally opposed to dissection and just feel icky about it (which is often the case for some omnis I know), the school/college/universities I went to would be absolutely fine with it and let you work from others' results, or do a separate assignment etc.

I had to dissect a rat once in college when I was 16, when I was still omni, and believe me, it was gross...
