I was just flipping around and saw a long promo "making of" type of thing on the Fox Movie Channel for
Nim's Island, a movie with Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) and Jodie Foster. Anyway, apparently there are a TON of animals in the movie: sea lions, turtles, etc.
They talked about the sea lions used in the movies and the director made a comment along the lines of (totally paraphrasing here): "It turns out when you bring a sea lion to the beach, they are like 'I've been waiting my whole life for this' and want to leave in the ocean. So we couldn't bring the sea lions anywhere except in the studio."
That made me exceptionally sad...and angry. Reminds me of how terrible exploitation of animals for entertainment really is.
They did discuss how many of the pelican shots were CG, and they "tried" to do a combo CG/animatronic sea turtle but it wasn't working or some shit so they had to stop production and either figure out a better animatronic turtle or use a real one. I'm unclear as to what happened because I was still angry over the sea lions getting a taste of what freedom might be only to be forced back indoors in a studio.
I know PeTA is saying they'll give
$1 million to the next scientist who can come up with lab-grown meat but what about $2million to some kick ass robot/CG geek who can come up with realistic animals for movies? Because robots are way more awesome.
